We all know that too many sweets cause our waistline to expand and ruin our hopes of getting into that sexy bathing suit. Still, that single cookie just doesn’t seem all that dangerous as it beckons. How could one little tiny cheat hurt? We tell ourselves that we’ll just cut calories elsewhere.

Even through our cloud of deep denial, we all know that one cookie always leads to another. We even know that the only calories we are going to cut are those of good healthy foods. Perhaps, what we don’t realize is that sugar in sweets, fast foods, and simple carbs actually do real damage to our bodies. Once we stick that cookie into our mouth, we are setting ourselves up for a rollercoaster ride of emotional ups and downs that lead right back to the cookie jar. In the process, our body has to constantly react to a barrage of sugar which can lead to physical and emotional breakdown. The list of potential diseases is scary, from chronic fatigue syndrome and depression though diabetes and heart disease.

I think that every so often we need a little reminder about what we are putting into our bodies. Often, in the chaos of our lives, it seems like an easier choice to eat fast food or have a sweet snack as a pick me up. However, in doing so, we are actually making things worse. There is hope and Sugar Shock! can show you how.

Getting fat is only one reasons to avoid eating sugar

“DIET and EXERCISE” is one of the most commonly heard phrases when people are talking about health these days, and for good reason.

I have reached that point in my middle–aged life where I am getting very serious about health and fitness. I don’t need to tell you about the sickness and death that I have been seeing with increasing frequency in people around me (and in myself, of course), you surely have your own stories to tell.

While I believe that the Exercise component of the Diet and Exercise duo is, ultimately, the more important, Diet is the easier component to manage and control.

Simple refined carbohydrates are a hideous and insidious health risk, as you probably understand, since you are reading this essay. If you are looking for a clear explanation of why, this book contains it.

So, do you buy this book? The answer is a resounding – YES – this is a great little book to get you started understanding what is going on in your body. It is an easy, solid read, with good and well–supported information presented in a clearly understood manner.

Since you have started on the journey to improving your health, this is probably not the first health–and–diet book, nor the last, that you will buy. This is a good one to start with, and it is not expensive. I am buying multiple copies to give away, and I consider this a good beginning for understanding the horrors of refined carbohydrates.

Good resource for the low carb lifestyle

In the past year there have been some major books published on low carb eating for your health, not just weight loss - and this is one of them. The author has chapters on what sugar and refined carbs do to your skin (think wrinkles, ladies) as well as the most up-to-date research on diseases that are possibly caused or exascerbated by a diet with a lot of refined carbs. I don't agree with her bashing of almost all sugar substitutes, but that's a personal thing. It's still a great resource and I highly recommend it.

Quit Eating that Worthless Crap ! or Else !

People talk a lot about DIET and EXERCISE when they are talking about health these days, and for good reason. I am getting very serious about health and fitness, and getting the simple carbohydrates out of my diet is crucial. I believe that Exercise is, ultimately, the most important factor in overall health, Diet is probably easier for most people to manage.

Sugar is a terrible health risk, as you undoubtedly know, since you are thinking about buying this book. This is a good little book to help you get started understanding what is going on in your body with respect to refined carbohydrates and sugars.

If you like this, and want something a little more “out there” you should look into the Paleo Diet, there is the original book with that title as well as others on the subject (Neander Thin is a good one, too) and they may provoke some interesting thoughts on the modern diet!

I suffered from hypoglycemia and found out from this book that I was causing it myself from eating too much sugar. This was a VERY informative book that I highly recommend.

A disappointment. Just seemed to rehash things that are obvious, and not especially well written. A much better book - Mindless Eating. It's clever, intriguing and stays in your head.

The truth, it hurts but it's true
Review created: 10/01/09

I don't smoke, drink alcohol often, bite my fingernails or gamble. My addiction is food and sugar in particular. I've known for years that I have cravings for sweets and starchy foods. Now I know exactly why I have those awful cravings, why I have headaches, mood swings and excess belly fat. This is well researched, well written book that everyone who tends to overeat needs to read. Dr. Atkins started the ball rolling by telling us that "fat" doesn't make us fat. Sugar does. This book expands on the chemical and biological reasons for this phenomenon. I will keep my book for future reference but I will purchase books for my family and friends and I've given a copy to my physician.
