This 7th novel is set just before the Civil War, and slave trading was in full bloom. The story tells of Dorothea Granger, who along with her family are staying with her Uncle Jacob on his farm because theirs was lost in a flood. Dorothea's mother hopes that her brother Jonathan will inherit Jacob's farm eventually, but Jonathan is now studying to be a Dr. Dorothea has attracted one of the men but he is in favor of slavery while her family are Abolitionist.
The book takes you back into the Civil War era. The story tells you how people like the Grangers learn to cope against slavery. In this saga, there is a special quilt that plays a major role. Wonderfully written......great author!
