I bought this game because I love horror movies and I heard this is a really scary game. It does scare me a bit, but I'm easily scared, so I can't say it's the scariest game around. With that in mind: I liked the idea of choosing the level of play - easy, medium, and hard. I chose easy and thus far, it has been fairly easy to beat the bad guys. I also am choosing to be "good" however there are two other choices based on a persons play. They can choose to be good, medium, or evil. I had a hard time with the controls, but if you are used to playing resident evil (PS1) then it should be fairly easy to learn the controls for this game. Most of the time finding your way around is easy, but there are times you can get lost trying to figure out which way to go next. For the most part, I enjoy this game and think most people will like this game as well.

"The Suffering" is one of the greatest survival horror games ever created. With a tough character like Torque you rarely feel so scared in the 3rd person mode but switch to 1st person and things come after you lightning fast. You have to find out what has happened in your past. Throughout the game you make choices like deciding to either help or kill people. Helping is much nicer and killing them really makes the game feel empty/lonely like a real killer should feel. The game stays creepy throughout and is about 7-9 hours in length. The story blends elements from the past like slave ships, World War II ghosts, and a mental institution. The graphics are slick and some of the best on any game.
No online play is a shame but the basic premise is there and a whole lot of fun. Rent before you buy but I recommend this one to anybody who loves a good, scary game. 5/5

Ah...The Suffering. To start off this game is sickenly twisted from the beginning. Not for the faint of heart I tell you that much. It's full of action, gore, mystery and twisted flashs of the past and the potential future. As the character "Torque" you are accused and found guilty of a triple murder. Little do you know however that deep inside hides a creature so twisted it should never see the light of day. I really could go on about this game but I won't. All I can say is you must try it for yourself...and then try to write a review for it.

I bought the game because it's got a good review from one of the game magazines.
But with no high expectation due to its low/reduced retail price, I didn't care much of it until I actually played it.

I played other horror games such as resident evil(most of series), silent hill(1,2,3,4), fatal frame, etc,
but the game's got a different story to begin with and a somewhat different style as other games may have shown in the past.

It's a 3 year old game, and I think it's still good enough to compete with other newer games out there for ps2.

Overall, I recommend this game to try as I've enjoyed playing this game.
Certainly, you can't beat the price.

From the start of the game, the eerie and original sounds/sound track lured me in. the graphics, amazing, detailed and creepy. But wait! It got better. The creatures.....hellraiser-ish? Perhaps. Lots of action! this game delivers and depending on the choices/decisions you make (yes you have choices here) the game adjusts. So, lots of repeat game play if you want all with different consequenses. The voice acting is outstanding as well!!!! Laguage is VERY EXPLICIT. I MEAN VERY!!! Not for little children.
This game ate up many happy horror survival hours of my life. It's time WELL wasted!!
If you are a fan of resident Evil, you'll enjoy this!!! Perhaps even MORE that res evil!!
Now, I am off to play part 2 of the suffering: The Ties That Bind.
I give this ganme the highest rating possible. For Adults ONLY!
Pure enjoyment!

  The Suffering PS2 Review

There are many things i like about this game. One is the Gore. Gore Everywhere! Next is the monsters! I am sure you will never see monsters like this anywhere. They have such a creative feel to them, you have to appriciate the work that went into it. Another thing about it that i absolutely love is the music. Not just regular instruments...you get trash cans banging into beats, and different everyday objects creating creepy music. It is a great story that has you on the edge of your video game chair. One thing cool about this game, is that YOU get to choose the outcome in the end. There are 3 ending based on how you play the game. a good ending (if you were a "good guy") a neutral ending (if you were both good and bad) and a bad ending (if you just a brutal individual during the game) The choice is yours. Just play with the lights on!

First of all the game was released in 2004. Second of all, I think the graphics are out of date for that year and the controls need work. Third and best of all this was an actually good game. what I like about this game is that the setting is different from all other action games I played. "Torque" who is the main character is locked up in prison for supposedly killing his wife and kids, but has no memory of it. So while in prison, hell starts to break loose and these monster start killing CO's and inmates. The story from here gets better and this game will keep you entertained or maybe scared since it's a little bit on the spooky side. This game is packed with alot of action and if you liked resident evil than this game is for you since this game IS similar to it.

  Fantastic, atmospheric game
Review created: 03/01/09
by:

The Suffering is a third-person shooter that was grossly overlooked by the masses upon it's release. Portraying a typical silent hero, you're Torque, a man alone in a prison on a haunted island, with creatures representing the various methods of throughout the island's sordid history, begin manifesting, attempting to kill you.

Packed with various "moral choices," you have the option of being a hero, a villain, or largely neutral to the goings on of those you encounter throughout the game. It's packed with intense music, visceral scenes, and a ton of jump-in-fright moments in the game, the atmosphere by far is the best thing going for this game.

The graphics are a little dated by today's standards, and the controls could use some work, but other than that, I highly recommend picking this up if you can find it.

great product just what i was looking for

Besides some minor scatches on the disc it work perfect on my playstation 2. I also got the case and manuel in great condition. The suffering is a great horror game, it is a more run and gun type game with some minor puzzle. it has a great story line and depending on your action in the game, determines the outcome of the game ending. One of the best features in the game, is that you can change the view of the game from first person to third person with just a press of a button.

Just keep this in mind this game had a 50/50 love/hate relationship with the gamers. Those that love it just loved it, and those that hate it just hated it. To me that what make the game unique I have never seen a game that had that type of rating. the norm is, if the game is bad than most people would say its bad. I remember reading a video game magazine and reading the review, if i remember right, one person doing the review gave it a 8.25 out of a 10 which meant it was a good game to buy. But in the second opinion, some else gave it juast a 5 out of a 10, which mean to stay away from the game or if must just rent it.

The suffering was release for the playstation 2 and for the xbox in 2004. this review was for the playstation 2 version, but from what I read about this game, is both versions are nearly identical

Bad ass game about killing monster in prison=good times
Review created: 12/06/07

Title about sums it up. I bought it because i like really violent video games and I like horror movies. It was a good combination. Different than Resident Evil and Silent Hill in that half the game wasn't about solving puzzles. It's what you'd expect. Run around a prison over run by demons. Collect weapons along the way. Stuff jumps out at you. You kill it. the story is very intriguing and you get to direct the courses the story takes. An added bonus to the game was your in game conduct gives way to 3 different endings. Apparently, if you you beat the game, and it is saved on your memory card, and you start playing the sequel (Suffering, Ties That Bind), the new has 3 different beginnings, depending on the ending of the first game. If you like 3rd person shooters, creepy dark areas, and angry monsters, this would be a good choice.

Awesome wierd scary role playing game

Wonderfully wierd role playing game. Creepy asylum style settings! The Suffering is fun if you like the scary games. You are a character that has to work your way through the building encountered different kindred souls and find out how they died through interaction with them! And of course you control the story line! We collect Playstation games, so of course this was another purchase for that as well! PS2 still rocks at our house and will for years to come!

  My "Suffering" has ended...
Review created: 11/09/06

Two weeks ago my brother told me he had just finished playing this Survival Horror game called The Suffering, and that he had thought it was amazing. He said it's even scarier than resident evil or silent hill. He made me promise to buy it and play it. He said in his opinion the game was 10/10. Well.... With recommendations like that you would think you can't go wrong. I was planning to find it for $6 to $7 used at some point anyway and play it but after my brothers recommendations I bought it new for $19.99 + shipping and tax which came to about $26.

I put the game in and saw the intro, and the game started. It seemed adequate at first. But the controls were very bad. And the camera angles were VERY bad at times (even on 3rd person view). I got motion sickness after 1 hour and had to turn it off.

The next day I popped it back in and I kind of got used to the camera. And today I finished the game with the GOOD ending.

I think this game is a prime example of the fact that an idea alone cannot make a good script for a game. You can't just STRETCH an idea to make a script. You have to use an idea, and then having the idea in mind come up with an actual story to interest people. So having said that I can tell you that this game seriously lacks substance. Even the idea that is stretched out is a mediocre one at best. The gameplay is not good. It is very monotonous, boring and cliche. The controls are bad, the gameplay is awful...

All in all it is a waste of time. I donot recommend buying, renting, or playing this game.
