Movie Description
Using his wits--and a dog-eared paperback--to guide him, a window washer takes a stab at success in the corporate world. In short order, he goes from the mail room to the sales office to the boardroom as a top executive at Vallee's Worldwide Wicket Co. But he discovers that making it in business isn't all it's cracked up to be, as he finds himself dodging vengeful superiors, back-stabbing underlings and a buxom secretary. Energetic update of the successful Broadway play.

This review is for the DVD (2000) version. I would always recommend purchasing a DVD over the video VHS version. Picture quality and special features are nearly always superior.

    About the Movie

This is one of the great satirical, musical comedies with all the charm, character and fashions that typified the 60s. Robert Morse in the lead role is not unlike a semi-sophisticated version of one of Jerry Lewis' characters from the same era - with the exception that he sings. And, he sings some wonderfully witty songs that must be very close to the bone in companies that take themselves far too seriously. Sammy Smith is superb in his dual roles as the quarter of a century mail room head who "plays it the company way" and then later as Chairman Wally, the ex window washer. The lyrics will never date, along with the hammy caricatures of the self serving executives and staff. Not all stage musicals have translated well to the screen but How to Succeed is a noteworthy exception - highly recommended.
