The franchise that set the bar for brawler-type games!

Yet another brawler type game, this is the franchise that gave brawler's their own genre! Forget all those knock off games, this sequel to Bare Knuckles (Streets of Rage 1) got the attention of pretty much every gamer during the early to mid 90s. This game offers 2 player mode, and there are several characters to choose from. Each character offers their own specific talents, and gives the game plenty of replay value. The game moves along fast enough to keep you involved, but the story is lacking. After all, stories in games from the 16-bit era were lacking a bit, unless you played RPGs. This game is all about action. If you've ever played one of these games, you'll be familiar with the punch-punch-punch-kick combo's that are pretty much standard in all brawlers.

Overall, this game is fun, and you'll probably get fair amount of play time out of it, but it is not too intense and can be played pretty casually. I feel bad giving it less than a 5/5, but there is only so much you can do in this game.

Impressive beyond belief, What Sequels are made of
Review created: 04/08/07
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Continuing on in one of the most popular and legendary beat ‘em series of games to ever grace the Genesis system, Streets of Rage 2 takes the fight back to the street with two favorite characters and two brand new brawlers in a fist battle to the finish! Taking to the streets, you must guide your brawler through several stages of bone crunching and body throwing action that is yet to be rivaled anywhere in the Genesis library. Through all of the crunching and enemy bashing that you do, you’ll find that many of the game play options that you have here have been tried in another game of this type, Fighting Force, but didn’t go over anywhere near as good as the Streets of Rage series. Considering that Streets of Rage is a dated game, and even the offspring of this game are dated as well, there isn’t a finer example of a good sequel that can beat out the original game other than this title right here! If you can get through the extreme difficulty {even on easy the game is hard} and you can learn just what all of the characters are capable of, you’ll find that Streets of Rage 2 is the true pinnacle of Genesis side scrolling beat ‘em up games.

Beat-em up action at its best. You have your choice of four characters to use and each has its own set of moves that match their personality. While Axel and Blaze return to the fray, you have the street smart Skate and the overgrown ox Max! You have a tough cop that uses a set of moves move akin to street-fighting, a hard-edged woman with a set of sleek, stylish moves that are speedy, but don’t do a lot of damage, and then a huge guy that just brutalizes people as well as a skating fighter that does little more than smash out fast combinations. All in all, you have a wide variety of moves with each, from punch and kick combos, to hard hitting grab combos. Each stage gets progressively harder, and you have a computer AI that can gang up on you in a heartbeat. With Streets of Rage, you have the ability to use the background, picking up weapons, throwing your enemies through bus stops and phone booths. The replay factor is pretty high if you’re into beating up the computer, and if you can get a friend in on the action, you can get some pretty good grudge matches going, along with teaming up against an enemy and beating them into submission.

The Genesis controller has never had much to offer in terms of control other than the standard three button configuration. A punch, kick and jump button is what you have to use, and most of the games control is based on a combination system, where you pound on the buttons in a particular manner and some sort of effect comes out. Pulling off the grab moves is easy enough to do, and even though you may have a little trouble at first, the control scheme is set up that even a beginning gamer can use it! With the added extra characters, you’ll find that different styles of play come into effect from the start of the first level. While some of the characters are fast with what they do, others are slow and plodding but can take plenty of damage as well as dish it out when it’s necessary.
A fast action platform game that places you in the mean streets of a city, you’re greeted with exceptional detail that will dazzle you. In-depth level designs place you in the urban landscapes with a dark and dreary mood, along with an interactive background that you can use to beat up your enemies. Character designs range from the exotic, to the basic, giving you everything from street thug

I love the series of streets and rage games. I think there all great games and sega should put them on there next collection. 3 is the best in the series but 2 is still every bit as good as a final fight game.

If only you could save your position...I remember the ol sega would be on for hours when my dad and i would take breaks on our way to beating the game...This game is highly addicting...It's like a short attention span arcade game but lasts a lot longer and is always changing backgrounds and boss'...

I love this game its the best side scrolling fighter. The graphics are great and the music is killer. If you like good side scrolling fighter games with great graphics and awesome music this is the game for you. One thing that I do not like about it is that you can hit your partner if your playing two player. Makes the game alot harder.

Streets of rage 2 is one of my favorite sega games by far. It is so much better then 1 I won't even compare them. It has great graphics and the characters special moves add dimension to the character(s) and game. I have not got bored of it yet since I played it years ago.
The soundtrack is so good I'd get the cd.
It is one of the few games I've played and beat in every difficulty, and got a thrill out of doing so! Beating it on its hardest level is most rewarding, and even if you die it's fun enough to want to play again, and again, and again. A all around great game. Young and older will enjoy it, fun for everyone!!

  Best of the Best
Review created: 07/13/08

Although I hold Streets of Rage 1 in high regard as it was the first of the series that I played; there is no denying Streets of Rage 2 as perhaps the best beat em up game of all time. Everything from the stellar soundtrack to the remarkable game play is legendary. Anyone who doesn't own this game or has not played it owes to to themselves to play Streets of Rage 2 as well as its prequel and sequel. With Street Fighter 4 going the 2D route of sorts, it would be awesome to finally see a Streets of Rage 4 game in the same regard.

Alex, Max, Skate and the beautiful Blaze. Coming from the old school era of video games the streets of rage series goes into the hall of fame for video games. I just wish they make a modern game for the new game consuls.

It's a great classic, I bought this game because I had the first and just like the first it brought back a lot of memories. The beautiful storyline interlaced with the colorful rumbling action make this a must buy for old school gamers. What makes it even better is that there is a duel mode where you can square off with your favorite characters. I'm happy that there are still people who make the effort to sell such great games like this.

This Game is the best out of the three game series. The first Streets of rage needed more moves and Streets of rage 3 had a kangaroo. Come on. This game has a timeless feel to it and it also has good music for every single level in the game. Sometimes I don't even play through the levels, i just go to options to listen to the music.

One of the greatest beat'em ups for a 16-bit system
Review created: 03/15/07(updated 11/27/07)
by:

I have always been a fan of Streets of Rage since the first game. I got Streets of Rage 2 as part of a bundle deal when my first Genesis crapped out on me. As much as I loved the first game, Streets of Rage 2 was quite a quantum leap in every aspect.

The graphics are much more detailed and larger than the first game and some of the best for the Genesis. The levels are beautifully detailed and make the game more fun to play through. Streets of Rage 2 has a managerie of great sound effects that give it a very authentic arcade feel. Topping the music from the first game would be difficult, but Streets of Rage 2 managed just that. The music provides the right mood and atmosphere for each level.

The gameplay is much more refined compared to the first game. Each character has more of a unique set of moves that make the gameplay different with the different characters, where the first game had more subtle differences between the characters. The controls are easy to learn and the game is challenging without throwing cheap shots to up the difficulty.

Streets of Rage 2 is one of the reasons to own a Genesis. I played this game numerous times and I still find enjoyment playing to this day. Anyone who loves the Genesis and classic games need to add Streets of Rage 2 to their collections.

Pros:
Graphics,Sound,Controls,Gameplay,Generally everything

Cons:
the front cover is silly

Without a doubt one of the milestones of the Beat 'em Up genre, Sega's Streets of Rage 2 was unleashed in the early 90s and quickly went on to become one of the most successful and loved games for the Genesis/Megadrive console. I never actually owned the game until recently, I just constantly swapped other games with my friends for it as a kid, but upon seeing it going for a few quid one day second hand, despite the fact I had completed it several times, I couldn't resist giving it another go and completing it a few times more. The storyline is fairly simple, as it often is with these games...

by: Shampoo-Girl -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Pretty arcade-like graphics. Awesome sound effects. Great gameplay.

Cons:
Later levels not as well presented compared to the first few.

Streets of Rage 2 was quite possibly the greatest beat-em up game of the 16-bit era. Surprising as it may seem, there were many gamers who actually considered it to be better than Capcom's Street Fighter 2 as well as their SNES-released Final Fight games. The first SOR was already a pretty good game, however its makers were obviously not content at simply rehashing everything that had made it a success. They had something way bigger planned in its sequel. The anticipation back then was at a level similar to an upcoming Final Fantasy release today. I remembered seeing dozens previews and...

An Old School Game that packs a Punch!!
Review created: 02/12/05
by: supersaiyan23 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Graphics, Soundtrack, Characters, Game Play

Cons:
None

Sometimes I get tired of all the latest advanced video games and new systems and look for a bit of old school gaming. I still have my old Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis somewhere in the basement and every once in awhile I knock the dust off of them and will them to work so I can experience the joy of the games of my late teen years. The Sega Genesis was never really one of my favorite systems. I could never really find enough games for it that I liked. However one particular series, Streets of Rage, and one game in that series, Streets of Rage 2, turned out to be one of my all time favorites.

Review created: 09/13/07
by: tommy_lop -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
better animation, better special moves, and better game play

Cons:
no multiple endings

I got Streets of Rage 2 a few weeks ago when I finally decided I needed a good brawler on the VC. Now I have the original Streets of Rage on the VC also and thought it was a good game that had it s flaws. Many compareStreets of Rage to Capcoms final fight, and there is a lot of similarities. The first game was better then the console version of Final Fight because of Final Fights screw up port on the SNES (also available on the VC), but Streets of Rage had problems to making it far from being the ultimate brawler, mainly the laggy and rather clumsy sprite animation. Now does Streets of Rage..

by: eightiesfan1 -- a member of Epinions

Pros:
Probably the best game in it's genre

Cons:
unfortunately, in two player mode, you can accidentally hit your partener. :(

In my opinion the Sega Genisis was one of the best video game consoles ever put out, and Streets of Rage 2 is one of the best games available for that system. Unlike movies, video game sequels are often a lot better than their predecessors. Streets of Rage 2 is one such video game. This is one of my personal favorites of all time. I can still play that video game all night. Streets of Rage 2 is basically like the NES game Double Dragon. You can play by yourself or with a friend and you work your way through 8 levels, each being more challenging than the one before. Throughout the level are...
