Album Notes Helmet: Page Hamilton (vocals, guitar); Peter Mengede (guitar); Henry Bogdan (bass); John Stanier (drums). Engineers: Wharton Tiers, Cover Hazelmyer, Deuteronomy. Recorded at Fun City, New York, New York. Loud, heavy and precise: this is the sound of Helmet. On STRAP IT ON, their debut album, Paige Hamilton and the boys create some of the hardest-hitting metal around. Each song is laden with a saturated distortion that sounds like a Mack truck in need of a tune up, and culminates in a sudden break that sounds like that same truck hitting a brick wall at 100mph. The critics called Helmet's brand of heavy metal "sludge-rock," but that term implies a sloppiness absent from STRAP IT ON, on which the band sounds like a well-oiled machine. Efficient and impacting, STRAP IT ON earned Helmet an instant cult following upon its release in 1990. Songs such as "Bad Mood," "Sinatra," and "Blacktop" are grunge classics.
