Album Notes Personnel: Howard Levy (pennywhistle, double ocarina, harmonica, piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Jerry Goodman (electric guitar, acoustic & electric violins); Oteil Burbridge (bass); Steve Smith (drums). Recorded at Neverland Studio, Marin County, California from January 7-16, 1999. Includes liner notes by Wayne Saroyan. In a bold musical experiment, virtuosos Jerry Goodman, Steve Smith, Howard Levy, and Oteil Burbridge came together for the first time to create THE STRANGER'S HAND. Without any preconceived notions, these four world-class players set out to produce music of the highest quality in terms of expression and excitement. The result is a collection of works that showcases each of their legendary talents to the fullest. Like the revered fusion groups of Miles Davis, Tony Williams, or John McLaughlin, this stunning ensemble successfully blends the best of jazz, rock, and funk into a ferocious mix that drives the music to new heights. Smith's powerful drumming thunders through several intricate tracks like the opening "Brick Chicken," a track that gets the energy flowing quickly. The Cajun-flavored "Sufferin' Catfish" is an ideal showcase for the violin work of Goodman and Levy's multi-instrumental talents. Dixie Dregs fans will prick up their ears at "Glimmer of Hope," on which Goodman shines brilliantly. The freewheeling "Elvin" is also an excellent feature for Smith, as befits its namesake. Other powerful tracks include the blistering Smith/Levy duet "Going Up!" and the epic title track.
