Synopsis
This 1961 novel, considered to be one of Heinlein's definitive works, was the first science fiction book ever to make the bestseller lists. Valentine Michael Smith, a human child raised on Mars, returns to Earth with psychic powers and a strongly alien outlook. After some difficulties in understanding and acclimating to society, he teaches others an adaptation of Martian philosophy--including group marriage as a way of life and cannibalism as the highest form of respect for the deceased--and as a result, his followers begin to share his extraordinary mental abilities. Having founded a church in order to disseminate his teachings more freely, Mike Smith becomes its Messiah-figure, with all of the divine and dangerous consequences that entails. Heinlein was strongly right-wing himself, and the character of the libertarian Dr. Jubal Harshaw can be said to be his mouthpiece. However, this book most powerfully appealed to hippies, who embraced its idea of free love and Michael Smith's mantra of "Thou art God." Somewhat more unfortunately, Charles Manson claimed the book as one of his inspirations. Today, STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND is still greatly beloved by both free spirits and hardcore science fiction fans--and is notable for having brought the word "grok" (meaning to know something at its deepest level) into vernacular English.

Without a doubt A must read!

This book has credited for ushering in the 60's movement. With that being said who wouldn't want to read this book. After reading this i had to sit back and reflect on all the outstanding points Heinlein made. Just the concept of being able to control events with the mind through the right types of meditation and control was mind boggling. This is by far a Masterpiece in Science Fiction and a must read for any person.

The main premise is a man is raised by martians on Mars, and then brought back to earth in his 20's. He thinks and feels like a martian; and he has the perspective of an outsider looking in! Absolutly fascinating! A true glimpse into the human mind!

Provocative Prose, Coined Words, Can You "Grok" It?
    Review created: 01/09/09

Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land" won the 1962 Hugo Award and is an international best seller and landmark novel. It opened the trade best sellers lists to science fiction writers, breaking down longstanding barriers. At the same time the novel became a benchmark of the 1960s generation and its iconoclasm and free-love themes.

"Stranger in a Strange Land" is the story of Valentine Michael Smith, born during the first manned mission to Mars. Because he is the only survivor, he is raised by Martians. When he arrives on Earth he is a true innocent: he has never seen a woman and has no knowledge of Earth's cultural mores or religions. With the popular author Jubal Harshaw to protect him, Michael explores human morality and the meanings of love. He founds his own church, preaching free love and disseminating the psychic talents taught him by the Martians. Ultimately, he confronts the fate reserved for all messiahs.

The impact of Stranger in a Strange Land has been considerable, leading many people to set up households based on Michael's water-brother nests. Modern readers must be prepared to overlook his political incorrect passages like: "Nine times out of ten, if a girl gets raped, it's partly her fault," however. That being said, "Stranger in a Strange Land" is one of the Heinlein's best novels pregnant with provocative prose and coined words. Can you "grok" it?

Heinlein has been highly criticized for his pontificating: organized religion is a sham, authority is generally stupid, young women are all the same, and the common person is alternately an independent entity or a dim-witted cog in the ignorant lemming machine. Yet the book is hard to put down. Its early pages conjure a truly masterful science fiction platform. Every serious reader with a science fiction collection should have it.
