The Story of Seabiscuit:1949 S.Temple/B.Fitzgerald film
Review created: 10/07/08(updated 10/07/08)
This was quite an enjoyable film, not a typical Shirley Temple offering, but better received perhaps by the modern viewer therefore than in Shirley's time, and also perhaps the current interest in the racing horse Seabiscuit also increases viewing value. The tale of romance between a nurse and jockey is not predictable, and is interspersed with real footage of the animal thought to not be a typical thoroughbred. It all balances out into a surprisingly fine tale, and the color photography is joyously vivid. Shirley's Irish accent, criticized by some at the time of the original release date (1949), blends quite nicely...Though not an overwhelmingly "classic" hit, the viewer can only think: if only "they" could make films like this today!!!
