Album Notes
A country tribute to the Stones? Why not? Blues isn't the only traditional American form from which the Stones derive their style. Throughout their career, the band has drawn on the country tradition again and again, putting their own spin on it to create such memorable songs as "Dead Flowers" (recorded by Townes Van Zandt, but not included here) and "Dear Doctor." On STONE COUNTRY, some of Nashville's biggest names gather to return the favor, with their interpretations of some classic, but not necessarily country Stones songs.
One of the most surprising things about this collection is that on tunes such as "Ruby Tuesday" and "Paint It Black," done by Deana Carter and Tracy Lawrence respectively, the artists don't try to country it up, opting instead for versions that stay fairly close to the original arrangements. Needless to say, the star of this recording is the Grand Old Man of country, George Jones. Ol' Possum's take on "Time Is My Side" has both the soul of the Stones' version and the captivating twang that is his trademark.
