OMG! beyond realistic- Book makes you feel like Alice!

To say "I couldn't put it down" was an under-statement! I felt like an addict, not being able to do anything, except read the book! I read it in less than 48 hours (less than 36 actually)! It is so realistic that I felt most of the time as if I were Alice. It is exactly what we are going through with my Grandmother. I learned so much in-site into how she must feel and what SHE is going through with this horrible affliction!

A look at Alzheimer's from the patient's perspective

This is an essential read for anyone who knows someone with Alzheimer's. Reading Still Alice, I felt like I was seeing life through Alice's eyes as she watched her brilliant mind deteriorate steadily. Then her physical capabilities began to decline. It truly is like something Alfred Hitchcock would write as a horror story and yet it is real. And it happens to people we know. And it happens with alarming frequency. The book reads like it is true although it is fiction. Educational, sad, haunting and well-written...I recommend this book.

this was recomended to me by a friend that is going through this with her 54 yr old husband. she felt like someone had been following them around for 4 years, it was their story. i am the care giver for my 82 year old mother that is going throught this disease. the book was very good and helped me understand what my mother is thinking and doesnt say. i couldnt put it down until i was finished with it. i am mailing it to my sister. even if you are not personally going through this with someone, chances are you will eventually. a great story for anyone.

  Still Alice

My husband also has early on-set AD. We found out at age 59. I found the husband to not be very caring, perhaps since he is so young, about 50, and in the prime of his career, and the children talk in front of her as though she were not there. The early part of the story I could really relate to about the early symptoms and testing. Perhaps I'm too protective of my husband, but this family gave her too much space to roam on her own. We are now facing the problems of our children wanting to find out if they also inherited the gene. It can be a very dangerous diagnosis to have to carry for a long time and run the risk of being denied insurance if the information was to become public knowledge. Good book for those who are uninformed, but did not really help me.

  Terrific debut novel!!!
Review created: 02/03/09

Genova takes a large and ultimately successful risk in writing a novel about Alzheimer's Disease from the perspective of the afflicted individual. Evidently she spoke with similar patients and attempted to give us a glimpse into the world they inhabit. Hard to say how accurate she is, but the unusual angle gave me new insight into who the AD patient is and continues to be. Will have significance in my practice and personal relationships with those with dementia.

Overall, a quick, well-written, and touching read with a noble purpose.
