Utterly pathetic excuse for a movie
Review created: 05/03/08
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a wastte of film and time that I will never have back. From beginning to end a cliche after total hackneyed rip-off; everything in this horribly made movie has been done elsewhere but better. From giant monsters to attacking insects, to bad special effects, to military experiments gone wrong to mob mentality. The end was so completely rediculous I laughed out loud. This film is an excuse for an anti-religion and anti-military/government political propoganda piece as both King and Darabont are vehement secularists who hate this country. So if you're one of those, you'll love it!

One of the RARE - Excellent Stephen King Translations
Review created: 03/07/08
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Far be it a secret that many of Stephen Kings' novels of Great Horror slumped into Cinema Productions. (Though recent Hollywood, in most instances alongside King himself, have brought significantly harder life to film- '1408' for example).
Now, King has brought to film his short story "The Mist"; and frankly - It Does Not Fail !!
The worst electrical storm on record has a small coastal Maine Town assessing the damages to their homes and businesses. Locals have flocked to the town's only Grocery Store to stock up on supplies while Police, Fire and Military Personnel blanket the surrounding area.
As a result of the Storm, everything is out — power, phones, and radios — leaving the town cut-off from the rest of the world. And alas the storm has also left behind an Ominous Mist that quickly shrouds the town, trapping those inside the Grocery Store when it appears that bloodthirsty, inhuman Monsters are lurking outside.
Panic and Confusion Reign inside the store as people struggle to decide what to do next. Three distinct groups begin to emerge: 1) those who want to find a safe means to escape, led by painter and family man David Drayton (Thomas Jane); 2) those who choose not to believe there's anything Evil in the Mist, led by David's neighbor, Brent Norton (Andre Braugher); and 3) those who embrace the chaos and believe the world is coming to an end, led by the religious zealot Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden).
With the emergence of these groups, 'The Mist' transcends normal Horror Movie conventions and becomes an enlightening study of religion, class, and human nature in the face of tragedy. Friends and neighbors suddenly become enemies because of the group they've chosen. David and the Maintenance Crew clash over how to fix the store's backup generator. David insists that the crew shouldn't risk their safety by going onto the store's roof to fix it, but the crew proceeds because only they (and not David) have the skills and training to make the right decisions.
Later, Brent and David clash when a bloodied David tries to describe the Abominable Creature with sharp tentacles that attacked the maintenance crew as they tried to fix the generator. Brent believes David fabricated the story as retaliation for a lawsuit Brent filed against him several months back. All the while, the insufferable Mrs. Carmody is gaining support amongst the scared with her doomsday preaching and calls for expiation and sacrifice of those whom she believes are at fault.
Writer/Director Frank Darabont does a tremendous job building and sustaining the suspense both inside and outside the store. The Monsters lurk quietly in the Mist, never totally visible until Darabont decides to thrust an attack upon us at the most unanticipated moments.
Once the immediate threat from the Mist has subsided, and before the next one arrives, Darabont turns on the tension within the store as the forces battle over complex societal issues and right approach to dealing with the situation.
For "The Mist" the Monsters are only a small part of the larger supporting cast. Although never fully exposed or explained, Darabont's terrifying creatures can best be described as flies, spiders and other creatures on steroids — they're ten times their normal size, with razor sharp teeth and penetrating claws.
The formulaic failure of past Stephen King adaptations have met the Modern Day Success' that truly grind-out the Horror King always intended !!
SEE THIS !! 5-Star - Cannot Fail You !!

No-name characters really brought the movie into a downward spiral. The plot was well-written, but the acting really suffered. The ending wasn't so shocking like everyone says, but it was still a good flick overall. Buy it!

After hearing many rumors of this film regarding the impending doom of the main characters I thought to myself I have to see this film. I figured ebay would be one of the cheapest places to look since I could not find any streaming websites with this video and also the fact it was highly recommended by my sources. I just flat out said I would buy it. I was not disappointed. The acting was actually decent and considering the theme of the movie, the editing effects were well done. The main character is thrown several hurdles as he is constantly barraged with physical and mental stress with each additional challenge. Who would have thought a local town dweller who found a knack for painting would have to deal with the obstacle of fighting other worldly beings and make every attempt to keep his family and friends alive. The ending was bitter sweet and unexpected but was acceptable as the story line was explained thoroughly and was easily believable. If you liked the doom and gloom movies that give you hopeless situations and also keep you on the edge of your seat then I would gladly recommend this movie.

I'm not a big fan of Stephen King movies, but this one was pretty good. The story was pretty good, and Thomas Jane was excellent.

The Special Edition disc 2 was better than the theatrical release as it was in black and white which set the mood better for the movie. Overall, this one's a keeper for the DVD collection.

I bought the movie because I had read the short story and that was outstanding. The movie did go along with the book until the end and I did not like that very will. I guess they wanted to put a real end to it instead of leaving the viewers thinking about it. All in all the movie was very good but they could have made the ending better.

The Mist, a MUST see for Stephen King fans

I did have to watch it twice to absorb the ending as it is so different from the short story ending..I wasn't too sure about the casting of Marcia Gay Harden. I have always enjoyed her as an actress but having read the story so many times I wasn't sure she was right for Mrs. Carmody, but her performance absolutely blew me away, she did an outstanding job. I thought the special effects were excellent. Some of the 'critter' scenes were pumped up and drawn out compared to the short story but once again, for me, it didn't hurt the movie. There are some things (I don't want to put spoilers in here) in the scene where he looks for his wife that I liked better in the book version, but overall, I really loved this movie adaption. A good old fasioned monster story, with what I thought were powerful performances all around, even the little boy was excellent, not irritating as many can be when a role demands a lot of stress and tears, etc. He pulled it off very well. Of course, the familiar face of Jeffery DeMunn (Green Mile and Storm of the Century come to mind) is always a pleasure to see. I especially enjoy him in Stephen King's works. This one is a definite must have for me, one that I will watch again and again. I thought it interesting that they added a black and white version and I am really looking forward to watching that one. (Thanks lipfird71). Just as he did with King's "The Green Mile", Frank Darabont once again stayed true to the book version of "The Mist" regardless of the changes in story line. As for those folks who are having trouble with the ending, just ask yourself 'If I was in this position, what would I do'. That is what my husband asked me, then I had finally got my head wrapped around it.
If you are a Stephen King fan or Frank Darabont fan, or just a fan of those great old monster movies, I do believe you will love this movie.

A Monster Movie That Shows Humanity's Monsters

When this movie went off all I could do was breathe...This movie struck chords deep inside my soul and the people watching it with me. Some of the most amazing creature effects seen in decades mainly because it's not CG...This movie will make you mad, sad, and hatefull all at the same time. This was the very first book I ever read by S. King (I was a teen at the time so..1980's) inside the collection called Skeleton Crew, and this was the story that really stood out among the collection..so when I heard they were making a movie based on it I had a Geek-gasm.

I was not disappointed at all!!!! This movie is a MUST SEE for everyone..except the children..it may scar them. This movie really is a story about how humanity would react when put into horrifying situations. And , it really shows how horrible people can be when put into these types of situations..especially those that use God to their own means. The one scene in which this is really shown will disturb you when you see it.

BUY THIS MOVIE~~~~The 2 disk has some fantastic bonus and making offs that are a must see and will show you the work and love that was put into this movie.

I loved this movie. It really told the story of how we act as people in times of crisis. The scariest thing in this movie wasn't the creatures in the mist but ourselves. If you have the 2-disc edition, check out the version done in black and white. It really adds a good creep factor to it.

I really enjoyed this movie. I think it maybe one of the best that I have seen in awhile. It has a lot of suspense and action but the end is a little sad. For me it was somewhat of a challenge trying to figure out what was going to happen next but that kept me interested in the movie. I would reccomend this movie to anyone.
