After a vicious storm wreaks havoc in their small town in Maine, artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) heads out to the town supermarket for some much-needed supplies with his young son, Billy (Nathan Gamble), and his neighbor, Norton (Andre Braugher), in tow. Their trip soon turns to terror when a menacing white mist settles in, leaving this group of locals and out-of-towners fighting for survival against an unknown, bloodthirsty enemy. When the local religious zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) begins to convince the group that the mist is punishment from God, Drayton and his cohorts realize that they may be trapped inside with an enemy just as dangerous as whatever is lurking outside. Tension runs high in this tale as the trapped group faces difficult moral decisions. Should they stay and wait out the terror, or make a break for it and risk suffering a terrible fate? Is the eerie mist the will of God, an experiment from the local military base gone awry, or, maybe, a freak natural disaster? Without modern conveniences and the normal conventions and rules to guide them, the group is easily swayed by the loudest opinion. Will they save themselves at the expense of each other, or work as a team to save everyone? There is a decent amount of blood and gore for horror fans, some deadpan humor and just a hint of politics thrown in for good measure. Thomas Jane is a stoic leading man, but Frances Sternhagen and Toby Jones are more fun as unlikely heroes. Laurie Holden, Alexa Davalos, Bill Sadler and Jeffrey Demunn also star in this creepy tale.

Top Reviews Review created: 03/07/08 by: 6 of 6 people found this review helpful. Far be it a secret that many of Stephen Kings' novels of Great Horror slumped into Cinema Productions. (Though recent Hollywood, in most instances alongside King himself, have brought significantly harder life to film- '1408' for example). Now, King has brought to film his short story "The Mist"; and frankly - It Does Not Fail !! The worst electrical storm on record has a small coastal Maine Town assessing the damages to their homes and businesses. Locals have flocked to the town's only Grocery Store to stock up on supplies while Police, Fire and Military Personnel blanket the surrounding area. As a result of the Storm, everything is out — power, phones, and radios — leaving the town cut-off from the rest of the world. And alas the storm has also left behind an Ominous Mist that quickly shrouds the town, trapping those inside the Grocery Store when it appears that bloodthirsty, inhuman Monsters are lurking outside. Panic and Confusion Reign inside the store as people struggle to decide what to do next. Three distinct groups begin to emerge: 1) those who want to find a safe means to escape, led by painter and family man David Drayton (Thomas Jane); 2) those who choose not to believe there's anything Evil in the Mist, led by David's neighbor, Brent Norton (Andre Braugher); and 3) those who embrace the chaos and believe the world is coming to an end, led by the religious zealot Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden). With the emergence of these groups, 'The Mist' transcends normal Horror Movie conventions and becomes an enlightening study of religion, class, and human nature in the face of tragedy. Friends and neighbors suddenly become enemies because of the group they've chosen. David and the Maintenance Crew clash over how to fix the store's backup generator. David insists that the crew shouldn't risk their safety by going onto the store's roof to fix it, but the crew proceeds because only they (and not David) have the skills and training to make the right decisions. Later, Brent and David clash when a bloodied David tries to describe the Abominable Creature with sharp tentacles that attacked the maintenance crew as they tried to fix the generator. Brent believes David fabricated the story as retaliation for a lawsuit Brent filed against him several months back. All the while, the insufferable Mrs. Carmody is gaining support amongst the scared with her doomsday preaching and calls for expiation and sacrifice of those whom she believes are at fault. Writer/Director Frank Darabont does a tremendous job building and sustaining the suspense both inside and outside the store. The Monsters lurk quietly in the Mist, never totally visible until Darabont decides to thrust an attack upon us at the most unanticipated moments. Once the immediate threat from the Mist has subsided, and before the next one arrives, Darabont turns on the tension within the store as the forces battle over complex societal issues and right approach to dealing with the situation. For "The Mist" the Monsters are only a small part of the larger supporting cast. Although never fully exposed or explained, Darabont's terrifying creatures can best be described as flies, spiders and other creatures on steroids — they're ten times their normal size, with razor sharp teeth and penetrating claws. The formulaic failure of past Stephen King adaptations have met the Modern Day Success' that truly grind-out the Horror King always intended !! SEE THIS !! 5-Star - Cannot Fail You !! Instead there is a bad spot on the disk that lasts for about 15 minutes. The seller also states that "Statisfaction is gauranteed". I contacted the seller (bookmavericks) and she responded and told me that since a month has passed since I purchased the disk (I buy a lot of DVDs and it takes me a while to watch them all) she will not do anything for me. Report this review Review created: 09/04/08 by: marysbaby001 ( 8 ) Stephen King has delivered yet another nail biting shocker..The Mist is top of the line in horror..Though sad the ending was a good one..jaw dropping as always..I actually had to stop reading Kings books coz they gave me nightmares..I admit I stayed awake for awhile after seeing this flick..Film starts out normal a young Family Father, Mother and little boy the day after a big storm perhaps a twister gasping at the damage left behind. Daddy goes to the store to do some shopping..he makes amends with his neighbor after past problems then all hell breaks loose..as a mysterious Mist surrounds the small grocery store the inhabitants find out the Government has been glambling with lives again...theirs! Why is it when the Government plays we lose?? This movie is filled with shock, gore, suspense and even some innocent romance..You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll gasp and if you're anything like me you'll jump..I loved this film and I highly recommend it to everyone!
