one half of a great album
Savoy Brown was peaking musically with the release of this record. Chris Youlden's writing was getting better with each successive recording. In short, all the parts (writing, arranging, playing, etc.) were in top form as the band finally broke free from a straight blues format.
So, why not 5 stars? Because of side two - this was originally released in the days of vinyl. Side one is studio. Side two is one long boogie jam recorded 'live'. While Savoy Brown cooks throughout side two, I don't think that it is something one will play over and over. It does make one wish that he/she had attended the show, however.
So, five stars for side one and 3 stars for side two average four stars overall.
Savoy Brown's next release, and last before this line-up started to splinter, 'Raw Sienna', was all studio with six great Youlden compositions.
Start there, then here.
