...and lot's of fun doing it.

Steambot Chronicles is an action RPG based around machines (mechs) called trotmobiles (they trot around alot).

The setting would best be described as part 1920s America, part 1850s Western, part modern/futuristic Japan. The story starts with a young man (the protagonist) being found on a beach (after what appears to be a shipwreck) by a "pretty girl". He of course (in traditional RPG fashion) is stricken with amnesia, and fortunately has no personality of his own. It's entirely up to you what his personality will become, whether a compassionate hero or callous villian, by way of responses to various dialogue options.

Once you are through with the initial phase of the game (10-30 mins), you can begin exploring various side quests and partaking in the various mini-games that litter the game relm (sort of like a jolly and "less-adult" Grand Theft Auto). From playing music on a large number of musical instruments, to hustling 9-ball (pool/billiards), to digging for fossils, to customizing your trotmobile (paint, license plate and all). Normally these mini-games would be meaningless after thoughts in a console RPG, but i-rem (the developer) has made them fun AND profitable, while the musical aspect actually effects portions of the main storyline.

Combat is somewhat clunky and convoluted to the novice, thankfully there is a quite useful tutorial accessible from the main menu. The combat is very in depth, and one can use several strategies to conquer their opponents. The unique control scheme will be a serious stumbling block for some, but for the most part enemies are not the brightest and can be easily dispatched. One must utilize both analog sticks to direct the trots movement, like a tank both up for forward, both back for reverse, and both left or right for strafing action. Combine this with multiple arm functions, blocking, jumping and dashing, and you end up with a complex control scheme.

The graphics and sound are a mixed bag, detailed in some areas but bland in others. Cell shading, along with a very anime-esque art style combine for a colorful and lively world to explore (at least where the cities are concerned). Music plays a large role in the storyline and is in general of a pop and lite nature, but sometimes lyrically depressing. The voice work is exceptional on this title, and anime fans will recognize several mainstays from popular anime titles. Sound effects are moderate to high quality, but somewhat run-of-the-mill and almost go un-noticed except for the ever present "stomping" of various trots. Video performance is average with occasional slow downs and/or tearing while rotating the camera, but nothing that detracts from the overall experience.

The bottom line is this game is fun, and there are almost no end to all the side quests and NPCs to talk to. One could easily cram 50+ hours into one playthrough with out exploring too much of the optional content, add in different endings and protagonist's personal development, and you could squeeze lot's of blood from this little turnip. You can also continue playing after completion of the main storyline, with actual exclusive content and a changing world post completion.

Like all games, Steambot Chronicles has it's flaws, namely the combat and lack of varied trot parts. But Atlus has really picked a winner to port to the west with this little jewel. If nothing else, the game warrants a purchase based on the vast amount of fun.

my 16yr old loves this games, plays it for hours. Music can be kind of slow, make the game seem slow moving for someone just watching.

This was a purchase made for my daughter, and she loves it. It was received in excellent condition, and as far as I know, there are no problems with the game. She said it is quite challenging.

It's called a sandbox game and there is a lot more to do than just the story line. I love the different instrument side quests. I like how you can upgrade the bots and different modes of transportation. I recommend it, I already beat the game; but haven't played in a while so I'll probably start over again.
