Without abandoning the quirky mix of gorgeous, acoustic guitar-driven pop tunes and heart-rending, misery-driven lyrics with which they're most closely associated, The Sundays' STATIC & SILENCE finds the band further fleshing out their lush, dreamy mope-scapes. With a darker, slower approach more akin to Country than to Britpop, Harriet Wheeler's angelic voice and melancholic lyrics are given a more intimate treatment than on previous albums. Guitarist David Gavurin builds each song with intimate acoustic guitars, breezy voicings, and spacious arrangements, punctuating them with chiming, cascading layers of arpeggiated electric guitar. Inspired instrumental touches abound; on "When I'm Thinking About You," Gavurin's baroque-sounding fingerpicking is accented with a brass section and bird calls. "Cry" mixes plaintive rhythm guitar and swirling strings, while "Another Flavour" is a distant, tremolo-filled rocker about the ephemeral nature of fashion. The somber brass on the closer "Monochrome" continues the musical exploration, giving way to sliding guitars, underscoring the depth and complexity which make STATIC & SILENCE a graceful, strong testament to the growth and staying power of these delicate pop heroes.
Editorial Reviews 3 Stars (out of 5) - ...Gavurin's airy guitars are still coupled with Wheeler's clear, angelic voice....most of the songs here are so gentle, they seem as if they might just float away... Rolling Stone (10/30/1997)
...STATIC is suffused with melodic Celtic melancholy. As always, Gavurin's textured, jangly guitar provides the perfect counterpoint to Wheeler's airy vocals. - Rating: A- Entertainment Weekly (11/07/1997)
