START PACKING is the first full album that Run On released after the band's impressive debut EP, ON/OFF, which was released less than a year prior. The album continues to find the band mining the broad musical territory that it staked out at the start. The tensions that Run On creates are plentiful and engaging, as noise is blended with beauty, density with space, and propulsion with slow-moving density. In short, the group relishes the joys of wedding experimentation to more or less traditional song structures.
Drummer Rick Brown provides the ensemble with a subtly unique voice as he approaches his modified trap-set with an orchestral sensibility. On top of that rhythmic base are cast Alan Licht's guitar/noise freak-outs and keyboardist David Newgarden's mix of soulfulness and industrial ambiance. Throughout it all, Sue Garner's bass playing runs back and forth across the tapestry, as her crystalline singing acts like a beautiful bird, invites a listener in for a closer inspection. Licht's adds a nice contrast to the mix with a couple of vocal turns. Though START PACKING was recorded at four different studios, it is assembled into a perfectly unified whole.

Editorial Reviews
...dense, complex, compulsively listenable pop...
Option (07/01/1996)

Recommended - ...bona fide POP music (alive, wide open, fearless)....Like Flaming Lips, there's too much stuff here to begin to make sense of unless everyone hears it. You should, cos more than any other left-field LP from the States right now, this you can hum and the cover's ace.
