I saw the movie first and liked it. Read the book and LOVED it! This book is 100 x better than the movie! I will read this one again and again!

Book was in great condition. It was used only in that there was a slight crease down the spine, which you get if anybody even attempts to read the book, so I was more than happy.

Stars, a special border town, a man in love with a stupid childish girl, a big adventure, a family, witches, a flying ship, princes, lightnings and a candle.

Got it?

Unforgettable.

  Stardust novel to movie compairison

I really loved the "Stardust" movie so I decided to read the book to see if the screenplay cut out any juicy bits or important characters (like tom bombadil in LOTR...). The movie version leaves out most of the first 200 pages of the novel, only keeping key characters and key plot ideas. There is an un-named charcter in the book that plays an big part in the novel that is not included in the movie. Although the cinematic version of "Stardust" includes many of the same characters, their names are different and personality traits differ to add drama and action.

To be honest, I was disappointed with the book as I didn't feel that it had a very strong climax, or that Tristan and Yvaine's relationship's evolution seemed realistic. I also felt that the epilogue fell short of my love-story-adventure-happy-ending expectations.

The book was ok in general. Gaiman's talent is evident in many parts of the story, but I feel that it was not consistant.

I rarely think this, but the cinematic version of "Stardust" is much more to my liking than the novel. It's almost too bad that that the novel was not based upon the movie screenplay, instead of the other way around.

If you like fantasy, action adventure and love stories this is a wonderful book for finding those features plus more. The pictures are lovely but there should be more for this type of story.

Never thought I'd be saying this
Review created: 03/07/08

I never thought that I would ever see the day where the book I just read would leave feeling disappointed and wanting more. I commonly have books that I don't want to end, those fantastic epic novels that take you far from your life, and place you in a dream world, Stardust was NOT one like that. After watching the film, after reading the book of course, I found that the movie was more descriptive in sections where, obviously, the book should have been immensely better. I know that directors take creative liberties with novels to make them "Silver Screen" worthy, but in this case, I think the director did a better job of telling the story than the author. In one section entirely, the entire sequence involving the ship, and the sky pirates, was totally uninspired in the novel, it was more in the way of hopping on a train, rather than being captured by lightning harnessing pirates on their flying frigate. Tristan's training aboard the ship, fencing, dancing etc... was completely left out in the novel, I believe that this was a critical part of the story, leaving it out was in err on the authors' side.

  Stardust: The Novel
Review created: 02/03/08

I bought this book because of Stardust-the movie that is my new favorite movie. I have read over half of the book so far and it is really nothing like the movie. This is the main reason why I found it a little disappointing. So I would not read it expecting it to be like the movie! Otherwise, it is a very interesting novel, especially if you like fantasy.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a very fast read but written well enough that you can put it down for a few days and still keep up with the story when you start to read it again. It is part fantasy, part humor, and part mystery.
Don't take my word for it...pick it up and read!!!

I like this book, although it was short & a fast read
Review created: 08/11/07

It took me 2 days to finish, but it kept my attention and entertained me the entire time. A cute story with enough bad guys to keep them running, throw in a sibling murder spree and heart cutting out witch, a unicorn and you've got a pretty nice little tale. I did just see the movie today and they do deviate from the story and take a few creative sidetracks, but that's another review.

  Average Book
Review created: 09/07/06

I was really disappointed in this book. I love Neil Gaiman, and I've adored everything he's done, but this is the exception to that love. His Sandman series and novels have always had such depth, such otherworldliness to them, that "Stardust" was a disappointment. If you're looking for a good fantasy novel, this is definitely a book you should buy, but if you're looking for Neil Gaiman's genius, sadly, it is lacking here.
