The unmolested (non-digitally remastered) version

For well over three decades now, composer/conductor John Williams (the ‘Indiana Jones’ trilogy, Jurassic Park, Superman, Home Alone, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) has remained one of the most renowned Hollywood film score composers. For many of his fans, the music he recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra for the Star Wars saga has been and will remain his ‘true masterpiece’, and his name is nearly synonymous with those of Mr. Lucas and Mr. Spielberg.
By now, this 1993 Star Wars Trilogy (boxed anthology) might seem somewhat outdated, since the release of the 1997 Special Edition soundscores also contains tracks of the last three episodes. Until 1997, this 1993 4-disc collection was the most complete version of all the original soundscore (OSS) recordings. Although much of the material had been released in other OSS editions, this anthology allows listeners to enjoy and appreciate the evolution of the music as the series moved from its inception through Return of the Jedi.
To date, this boxed set is still the best source for the original Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration tracks. This collection still has tracks that the double-CD per episode don’t include; i.e., the Star Wars main title theme is here and in its 5 min/23 sec entirety, compared to the Special Edition (edited version) of roughly 2 minutes in length, as well as the original version of Lapti Nek (1983)…which was completely deleted from the 1997 Special Edition version.
As an added bonus, the included booklet of the soundtrack adds to this collection’s rarity. Included, are over fifty rare illustrations by Star Wars’ original artist, as well as original concept designs by George Lucas. Also, the pictures used in this 4-CD boxed anthology are in fact rare Star Wars paintings. This booklet is much more comprehensive than the inserts which were included with the subsequent Special Edition CDs, and will most definitely make a ‘good read’ whilst listening to this Star Wars Trilogy.
Although some listeners may feel that the sound quality of these recordings might fail in comparison to the digitally remastered 1997 Special Edition version, it nonetheless contains hours of great original quality recordings...which have all since become somewhat sterile after subsequently undergoing 'digitally remastering' or have just vanished altogether…enjoy!
