A Better Version of the Video Game's Story

As a book, "The Force Unleashed" is competent if unspectacular. The writing itself certainly isn't bad, but it trusts the reader to be familiar with the Star Wars universe and setting in order to skip through a lot of clunky description; if you ARE a Star Wars fan, this won't be a problem, but newcomers would be totally lost.
As a Star Wars story, however, "The Force Unleashed" is pretty good. Essentially, what you're getting is a better-detailed, more closely-examined look at the story presented in the video game of the same name. If you're a fan of that, or if you're a fan of the darker era that the story takes place in, then the story definitely delivers here.
One of the things I liked best about the book, as opposed to the video game, is the attention payed to the character of Juno Eclipse. She essentially shares double-duty as protagonist along with Vader's apprentice, and getting to see more of her character and more of what makes her tick really helps the story itself, and gives it a believable, emotional core that's more satisfying than simply hacking one's way through a video game.
To avoid spoilers, I'll keep the bottom line brief: if you liked the game's story, you'll like the book; if you're into Star Wars in general, this is a pretty good story for that universe; if you're not up-to-date on your Star Wars mythos, try to become more familiar before delving into this one.
