I could hardly concentrate at work today because I knew once I got off work, I would be driving to EBGames close to my home for a copy of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Ever since I tried out the demo. I could not get it off my mind. One reason because I have hardly played any Star Wars related games prior to the release of this game. Although I was really close to getting Lego Star Wars but I didn’t in the end. That’s why I love downloadable content so much because you can actually try out the games before you buy. And a lot of the games that I like happen to offer demos.

But did the game live up to my expectation?

Graphics & Audio
The graphics are amazing and I have mentioned that in my demo review already. But with the demo you could only see so much since it was only part of a level. The voice over and lip synching is much more life like compare to other games with dialogues. One thing I forgot to mention from my demo review is that, the environments really give you the impression that you are within something massive like when you are inside the hangar or deep inside the ship’s core. And since so many people asked, no this game does NOT support 1080p full HD output unfortunately. It would be nice if it was though obviously.

And as for audio, I’m no expert but I like the sound effects, specially the lasers and when you are killing enemies with your beam sabre. The sound effects are really movie-like. I have not encountered any missing audio yet as reported by Gametrailers.com. It did mention about missing audio in the ending though. That would be such a turn off!

Game play & Controls
With the EMM engine controlling what materials to use for creating each object, the Havok controlling the objects’ movements and finally the last engine, the Euphoria engine determining how enemies react to their environments. The combined affect of the three physics engines really created a realistic experience. For example, watch closely when you Force Grip an enemy, if he is close to some crates, he will actually try and hold on to it. I think little details like this really add to over gaming experience. I have not encountered any clipping problems so far reported by Gametrailers and I hope I do not. The game is also somewhat on the short side as well with only 9 missions.

Controls are pretty straight forward, if you have played other action games before it will take you no time to get used to the figure out which button is for what purpose. When fighting bosses, you will finish them by following a set of buttons much like in Heavenly Sword. Overall you will go through each level killing enemies with a few different combo moves, and the hack and slash may bored some players after a while. It quickly turns into a level grinding fest like an RPG game when trying to level (power) up your three forces - Force Lightning, Force Grip and Force Push. The forces do provide hours of excitement but after that, they become just a bunch of weapons. And did I mention there’s no online game play?

Final verdict
After all the hype generated over the past few months, I can assume this game will be a must for hardcore Star Wars fans. Those that are into third person action like Devil May cry may also find this game entertaining. But for how long? That really depends on how fast you get bored of repetitive game play with no online component. In my opinion, its another game that didn’t quite live up to the hype generated unfortunately. 7.5/10

  Force Unleashed SUCKS!
Review created: 12/23/08

Another reason why Lucas Arts has lost my respect! Star Wars: Force Unleashed has ruined me. I can no longer just enjoy a game. I must nit-pick it for its flaws and then wallow in my loathing and hatred for poorly designed games. Let me explain:

Controls: The targeting does not work. You try to lock on to an opponent who is obviously killing you and instead, you grab some space junk instead. Or, people can sneak up behind you and you have no clue they are their untill they slash you in the back. Then when you try to target them you can't because you are facing the wrong way, even when they are the only opponent on the map.

Logic: Light sabers are the ultimate in Star Wars warfare. In this game, they might as well be a big stick. No one is ever sliced in half. Infact, you must hit some basic characters 5 - 6 times before they die. LAME!!! I WANT TO SLASH SOME FOOLS!

Force: Gay Gay Gay!!! Even after you use a cheat (Katarn) to gain full powers you still can't rule the board. You are relegated to 3 basic forces with slight variations.

Over all, the graphics are beautiful and the story line is interesting. I don't know how it ended because I quit on the third level out of frustration and boredom. Lucas Arts is quick to throw out junk just to make a profit. They could have focused for a few more months on R&D and made a real winner here. There is no excuse for phantom walls and getting STUCK in a stupid plant/wall! All in all, I don't recommend this game!

This is by far the best Star Wars game I've purchased. The AI is incredible. The graphics, awesome. In my opinion, the only thing that could make this game any better is to actually be in it.

I recommend this game to all Star Wars fans.

  The mystery plot...
Review created: 02/02/09

Where did this plot come from? It's really hard to enjoy and game when you pretty much know that A. Vader will not be killed and B. The Emperor will not be killed
Based before Episode IV the game feels like an afterthought to the Star Wars Saga
(which is what is is kinda, right?). A pure money making endeavor.

Besides the whole plot issue, the game was fun to play. Graphics were incredible and the sound effects made me feel like I was actually watching a Star Wars animated epic. It really did draw you into the game. Not alotta of puzzles to solve, but mastering the saber and force moves was fun. I'd like to see something like this by Lucas Arts that makes you solve more puzzles on your own and not have the game drawn out before you. More of a 'roll playing mind game' and not a 'go here adventure only' format.

all in all, it was a good purchase and for Star Wars fans it should be enjoyable
AE

  Nice game with some issues

to be honest, before i ever bought this game i finished the demo like 25 times! because is just so much fun, the down side here is that when you are just getting a lot of fun then comes a slow-boring scenario where you just move around with nobody there to stop you

if you are looking for a clever-well done game to enjoy the power of the FORCE then this is the one for you, plus after you are done with the story you can start over to enjoy all your unlocked powers in early missions, which i am doing now!

the actual time to finish this game is around 9 hours with difficulty set to normal, but i did finish this once and now i am playing

i just would love this game to have a versus mode to play with someone else

still has some glitches but its doable

Excellent game with an interesting story line linking the two original trilogies. Game play is great and goes from easy to extremely difficult. Graphics are flawless and the sound is recorded in DTS which puts you in the middle of the action. Definitely recomend this game especially for Star Wars fans!

  killer game for SW fans

Killer gfx, killer story, killer character control. I feel like I've become the character when I play. I'm late to the PS3 scene, and I've only played a couple other games, but this game is the bee's knees. I'd say it's good for kids and adults alike. I can spend hours wandering the levels looking for extras and slinging my saber at everything. Lots of interaction in the levels. I've noticed a few spots where the character gets stuck in the walls, or dangling on a cliff (sometimes requires a restart) but it's few and far between. Bottom line, buy this game and play the hell out it.

  OK CHECK OUT MY CRAP
Review created: 02/21/09

The sound and graphics are very well developed. The story's pretty decent too. In my opinion, the last time a game played out like this was God of War. But the difference is its hard to compare this to God of War. Almost impossible. The flaws of the game are that when you get going with the game, certain enemies require more strategy based on your terrain and what powers you can use. And then the bosses you fight are practically Force-immune right off the bat, so you have to rely on using your environment and waiting it out for the time to strike. But these are minor issues, really. The reason why many people knocked this game as being average is because they released reviews for it preemptively based on what the demos offered. But its the same thing all over again. It's a demo, NOT THE FINAL PRODUCT. I heard the demo was okay. But I still bought this game. And honestly? For being my first Star Wars game, it was pretty enjoyable. But if you're skeptical, better to rent it or borrow it. Play it a bit. If you like it, buy your own. The game has two alternate endings, the option to replay earlier levels with unlocked force powers and increased stats, and even costumes and customizable lightsabers. So there is some decent replayability, but the drawback is, you can only really play it through twice. The story's the same for the most part, but the endings are worth seeing

  Great Game!
Review created: 01/30/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was a little concerned with some of the reviews I read one some of the game websites. However I was very surprised with how good this game really is. If you are a Star Wars fan you'll really dig it. This is by far the best SW game when it comes to using the force. Being to tare just about anything out of the wall, picking up enemies, force lightning, force push...it has it all. Lightsaber combat is great as well because there are some pretty cool combos and neat ways to introduce force lightning/push into your attacks. Above all I was really impressed with how tight the story is and how it fits into Star Wars continuity. When I first heard about Vader's apprentice I thought, "oh yeah, right, he never had an apprentice! how are they going to work that in?!?" ...but they did a great job and you'll get a kick out of how the story affects the original trilogy. Other reviewers will get into more of the game details but I just wanted to add my two cents and say that this game really is very good.

I downloaded the demo on ps3 and this game is incredible! I can only see true Star Wars fans going crazy over this game. Since it's the first Star Wars game I've played where you can lift pretty much any object on screen with the force and destroy an AT-ST in one swipe of your lightsaber. I highly recommend it.

One of the Best Star Wars game

Many reviews of this game are not positive. I decided to get the game anyways and I like it a lot. The game has beautiful graphics, great sounds, music and awesome cut scenes. Each level has different enemies and they all look great.
There are many bosses, bigger mosters etc. The worlds are detailed and look breathtaking. Lucas Art put a lot of work to make visuals in the game look really great. The game play can be frustrating because the controls are not perfect and often it is difficult to kill the enemies. But once you learn combos killing enemies is rewarding. There are some bugs in the game where you can get stuck between walls and cannot get out. However, all these shortcomings cannot spoil my fun with this game and the Sith powers! I do not agree with reviews which rate the game below average. I cannot give the game Excellent rating because of difficult controls and occasional bugs but definitely this game is above average. I would recommend this game to Star Wars fun and the gamers who enjoy games like Devil May Cry.

This game has a unique format. You use your force powers to eliminate the jedi. As you progress through the levels you find "ability points" which you can stick into a ability tree. The commericals looked much better than the game actually is. The platforming is sloppy, the force powers are redundant and there is virtually no reason to use your lightsaber except when you run out of force. I am not impressed by this game.
