Star Wars Darth Bane: Path of Destruction

This book is a hardcover book that was written by Drew Karpyshyn.
It was released in September of 2006 by Del Rey books.

Darth Bane: Path of Destruction is set in the final years of the Sith verses
Jedi wars. The time fram is about 1000 years before the battle of Yavin in
the Star Wars Timeline.

This book starts off with the introduction of Dessel as the major character.
He is a miner on the planet Apatros. He has always had feelings of things
that would happen before they did. After a huge Sabacc game circumstances that
are out of his control he ends up murdering a Republic soldier and he goes on
the run joining the Sith armies as a recruit.

In the Sith army he distinguishes himself as a masterful warrior and tactician.
His Sith masters recognize the force potential in him and train him to become
a Sith Lord.

During his training he learns and finally rejects all that is taught to him.
He is left to draw upon the ancient master's texts to gain new knowledge. It is in
these texts that he finds information to help him become the master of the Sith!

The book goes on to show the final battles of the Jedi army of the Light against
the Sith brotherhood of Darkness.

This book was really interesting. It was so fun to read about the ancient
Sith empire. You also were able to see the birth of the Sith mantra of:
"Two there should be; no more, no less; One to embody the power, the other to crave it." which continued all the way up to Palpatine and Vader!

This is an awesome read. This was the first book I have read in the Old Republic/Sith Era series and I had a blast.

5/5, a perfect book!

I loved this book. It was great read; real smooth with really good plot points. Bane is a very interesting character and it was fun to follow his early history. The book got even more exciting the farther I got into it. There is more to Bane's story than chronicled here and I hope they do a follow up to this.

Darth Bane: Path of Destruction was one of the first Star Wars novels that I read, and to this date remains one of my favorites. I found this book interesting from the first page. This book really gives you a good sense of what leads people to the dark side and let's you see, in depth the history of the Sith. Depsite a few small continuity problems, Drew Karpyshyn really captured the feel of the days of the old republic. I would have to say that this book is a must read!

A non-stop action and intrigue packed story. In my opinion, this is one of the best Star Wars novels to date. Path of Destruction takes you back to the pre-Episode I universe and shows us some of the rich history of the Sith. Focused on Darth Bane, the story takes us through the rites and passages of becoming Sith. Bane is a character with a tragic past, troubled conscience, and an inner strength which is ultimately harnessed for the Dark Side. Readers are finally enlightened as to how the rule of two came to pass within the Sith order. A great read from front to back!

The first of the Star Wars novels
Review created: 07/08/09

This is a great book that keeps you hooked all the way through. It takes you through Bane's rise from a lowly cortosis miner to a dark lord of the sith. It also goes through some of the history of the sith along the way. If interested in Star Wars and want to know more about the sith, this is a good book to read. Also, if you want to get started on the Star Wars novels I am pretty sure this is the first one chronologically.

  Darth Bane: Path of Destruction
Review created: 12/02/08

Well, I bought it for more background on the character & the times he lived in, but found myself enjoying it far more than I initially thought I would:) Bane is a Sith a person can get behind when they look at their lawful evil side & understand his principles more. I think it's a great start for a short series, as "Rule of Two" was an excellent follow up to it, but I can't say much lest I spoil the read for you:) I bid you purchase this & I'm sure you'll enjoy this every bit as much as I have:)

  Perfection!!!

Coming from a serious collector and die-hard Star Wars fanatic, you can trust my opinion on this one! This book is a definite "MUST HAVE!!!" for anyone who has even the slightest interest in any of the Star Wars movies, books, or comics. The author has you spellbound from the moment that you open the book, to the dreaded moment that you finish reading it! Now the reason that I use the expression, "dreaded", is because the author starts the book off so slowly and keeps the reader entranced throughout and you can't put it down, so when you are reaching towards the end of the book, everything finishes fast, too fast, and it leaves you wanting more. I feel that this is one of those books that is great reading material for everyone, but it is written in a way that a teenager will enjoy it, but a mature adult that understands the intricasies of real war, true love, or even the bitterness of betrayal will finish reading this book in less than 2 days because you won't be able to put it down! Don't waste your time reading any more reviews, just go and get yourself a copy!!

  Gladly surprised!!!

When this book was out, I wasn't sure reading a story 1000 years before "a new hope" would be intriguing. But "Yes it is". Finally, after reading a few reviews i told myself to buy the first book and see how it is. It's really good. I didn't finish it yet, but so far I'm at page 360 out 400 and something and I love it.

It is different from the other books. In the sense that the Sith are the object of the story and not the Jedi. The story takes place on Apatros a planet that helps mostly the republic. The main character is called Des and he's a minor. By reading this book, you will see how he went from semi-good to evil.

The great thing about this book is that the story is fast and that there aren't chapters written just to make the book seem bigger. Another thing i liked was that there was some violence or action from the first chapter. In this case Des injure someone.

In general, This is a great book and I'm going to buy darth bane rule of two and maybe mass effect written by the same author.

  Only Two There Are
Review created: 04/17/08

Most of the books and comics in the Star Wars Expanded Universe have taken place either 25,000 before the Battle of Yavin or up to 40 years after the BoY. It is a delight to finally have fiction set in another time, and this era in particular (1,000 years before BoY) has not been explored. To my knowledge, only one comic book series (Jedi vs. Sith) has been set during this time, as the Knights of the Old Republic games and comics take place several thousand years earlier.

Drew Karpyshyn is a great writer - he wrote the script for KOTR, which had an excellent plot I would rank right with the three original films and the very best of the novels. By the midpoint of the game, the storyline was absolutely riveting as your character worked out his or her past and started to understand the underlying drift of the tale. With this game as proof, I anticipated Karpyshyn's first attempt with the Star Wars Expanded Universe.

The story follows the future Darth Bane, who had a horrible childhood, was abused by an alcoholic father and condemned to work in cortosis mines on the barren planet Apatros. He is a large and physically powerful man who subtly uses the dark side of the force to gamble, gets in a fight and then has to flee the planet.

He eventually finds himself fighting on the side of the Sith in their war against the Jedi. He is a captain/lieutenant when his skills are discovered and he goes to the Brotherhood of Darkness/Sith headquarters on Korriban. Karpyshyn shows how the Sith have lost their way by preaching equality amongst them, and indeed, they come across as somewhat bad but not truly evil. This part of the book provides a superb foundation for Bane's determination to enforce his newly-conceived doctrine of the Rule of Two.

If you like Star Wars and want a new era, characters, and history to explore this is definitely your ticket!

Good read, but I was slightly disappointed

I'm going to be completely honest. I had very high hopes for this book after reading reviews by other readers. But within the first 20 pages my expectations weren't met. The book was good over all, but there a few inconsistencies and awkward setting changes that were slightly irritating.

The general story line is great, I think that was excellent perhaps superb. However the connection made between certain events seemed as if the book was rushed together and that little effort was put into creating an organized, seamless story. Descriptive writing of each individual scene was par, it wasn't as deep and dark as it should have been considering the subjects.

Also, dramatic leaps forward in time through the story were interconnected with vague, nonintuitive events that seemed sort of "childish" in the way it was written. This reminded me of when I first studied literature in school and was tasked with creating a story under a guideline template. You are taught to create 3 major events, beginning, climax, and ending as your first effort. Then you create intertwining writing to connect these events after the end of the story is already clear in your mind. The way this book was written reminded me of the way I used to write. I would put too much effort into the course of the story, and I would tend to rush the transition between major events to avoid unnecessary efforts.

I must note however that my standards for writing are very high now, I am very picky and I may be giving less credit to the author than he deserves. The book is very good for its genre and for a Star Wars book specifically, but anyone who expected this book to explore the dark side in more depth than had been explored in other Star Wars novels, don't get too excited. This book was written under the same ploy that others were, to appeal to a wider audience. The readers out there like me who yearn for a darker depiction of the Star Wars universe should keep looking.
