Children of the Jedi is a hardcover book that was written by Barbara Hambly in 1995. It is the first book of the Callista Trilogy and the book was released by Bantam Spectra.
When I first picked up a copy of the book, one thing that struck me was the excessive DETAILS contained within its pages. While it's nice to know some of what's considered normal in the Star Wars galaxy, there's such a thing as Too Much Information, which is, IMHO, Ms. Hambly's failing as an author.
On the other hand, the plot, while not a fast-paced action-packed story that most Star Wars fans have come to expect, still contains a lot of 'history', including the never-launched "Eye of Palpatine" dreadnought, the Jedi Knight Callista who gave her life to stop it, and Luke's second (or 3rd, if you count Jem Ysanna in "Dark Empire II") love interest, while Leia and Han investigate Imperial dealings on a planet where a former concubine of the Emperor and her (and the Emperor's?) son Irek (Cool name!) are plotting a coup with the leading Houses of the Senex Sector. It's kind of a refreshing change from endless confrontations with the Empire.

) This book was slow to progress, the story was out in left field. Palpatine had a court and concubines?! Come on the guy was an shriveled old, evil man bent on power. I'm much more likely to believe the that he made a clone of himself rather then getting jiggy with a hot girl hanging around- that's so wrong on many levels.

A 'Thinking-Man's SW Novel!Review created: 05/28/07

Barbara Hambly does what very few SW authors are successful at accomplishing: writing Luke as a great character. Each character in the novel that we've grown up with -from Leia to C-3PO- are true to their movie counterparts, and are fleshed out even more.
The most wonderful character in the novel, aside from Luke, is the ghost Jedi Callista, who is leagues above Mara Jade, and a more natural fit for Skywalker's love life, especially since Lucasfilm requested that she'd be written as a soul mate for Luke.
A lot of SW novels out there now are simplistic in story and repetetive in their tales and plot. This novel proves as an exception to the norm: this is SW storytelling at its finest (especially for being an NY Times bestseller!)
