The Approaching Storm is a book written by Alan Foster and released in 2002 by Del Rey books.

The Republic is decaying, even under the leadership of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was elected to save the galaxy from collapsing under the forces of discontent. On the tiny but strategic planet of Ansion, a powerful faction is on the verge of joining the growing Separatist movement. The urban dwellers wish to expand into the prairies outside their cities -- the ancestral territory of the fierce, independent Ansion nomads. If their demands are not met, they will secede -- an act that could jump-start a chain reaction of withdrawal and rebellion by other worlds of the Republic.

At the Chancellor's request, the Jedi Council sends Kenobi and fellow Jedi Luminara Unduli to resolve the conflict and negotiate with the elusive nomads. Undaunted, Kenobi and Unduli, along with their Padawans Skywalker and Barriss Offee, set out across the wilderness. Many perils lie waiting to trap them. The Jedi will have to fulfill near-impossible tasks, befriend wary strangers, and influence two great armies to complete their quest, stalked all the while by an enemy sworn to see the negotiations collapse and the mission fail.

The Approaching Storm by Alan Dean Foster

I have been a fan of Star Wars novels since 2001 and Alan Dean Foster added to the Star Wars canon admirably with this installment. For those of us who wondered what Mace Windu was referring to in Attack of the Clones when he said that Obi-Wan had just returned from a "border dispute on Ansion," this novel provides the details. Obi-Wan is portrayed with his usual dignity throughout, and there were many references to 'something' distracting Anakin from his duty as a Padawan of the Jedi Order. I found it frustrating that Anakin's distraction was referred to, but never truly explained. Was he thinking of his mother, or of Padme? Or both? It would've only enhanced the novel to explain and explore the conflicting emotions within him, rather than simply grouping the two ambiguously. Overall, I would rate this an extremely enjoyable distraction from the events that occur immediately thereafter. Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee are captivating characters in their own right, and their relationship stands as one of the best written Jedi/Padawan interactions that I've encountered. The villains of the novel are very well-developed, and foreshadow events that connect evenly in the Star Wars canon. Ultimately, I enjoyed this novel, but felt that a greater committment to Obi-Wan and Anankin's character portrayal would've enhanced it immeasurably.

Good story of Anakin and Obi Wan, some insights into the overall Star Wars saga as well as great character relationship building between Anakin and Obi Wan.

Not the fastest of all the Star Wars books.... but a must read if you're dedicated to knowing the full story.

  A Fascinating Adventure

This is a great book, cover to cover. Invoked my interest immediately and never lost me. In it we go along with Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker on a mission to the planet of Anison which is not a notable place of its own, but is politically tied in a way that makes it a major strategical importance as the war advances. They go to assist another team of Jedi, Luminara Unduli and her apprentice Barriss Offee. The challenge placed before all four of them is to get the various political factions on the planet to unite and vote to join the republic, while their enemies actively plot to prevent their success. In this book we get to know Obi-Wan and Anakin much better and get a further glimpse into the life of the Jedi through the comradery and communication between the Jedi as their adventure proceeds. The planet, with it's variety of animal life and groups of people, will excite your sense of wonder and imagination. A very good read.
