Star Trek: Birth of the Federation

Birth of the Federation is a turn-based computer strategy game that is based on the Star Trek fictional universe. It was published by Micropose and released in 1999 for the PC.

This game is set in the Next Generation Timeframe. You have a choice of picking one of 5 playable races to try and control the galaxy with: Federation, Cardassians, Klingons, Romulans, or Ferengi.

Each race has a special bonus when playing the game and interacting with the 30 minor races. The Federation are diplomats, the Cardassians and Romulans excel in espionage, the Klingons are warriors, and the Ferengi are great with bribes and economy.

The game centres around you having to either control the galaxy or eliminate your races two major enemies. You can either conquer your opponents or join together with them in alliances (Ferengi/Federation coalition?! :) ) to take over the galaxy. You also try to use alliances with minor races to help boost the stake of your galaxy.

Another important part of the game is morale. Each system has a morale rating which depends on many factors, which differ from empire to empire. For example, if the player controls the Federation, a declaration of war will significantly lower morale. For Klingons, it is the opposite. Federation morale is very difficult to maintain, while Romulan is the easiest. If a system's morale falls too much, the population of the system attempts to rebel. If the rebellion remains unchecked, the system will declare independence. Unlike major and minor races, conquest is the only option for returning an independent system to the empire.

The main game is played on a 2D map, while space combat is done in a 3D rendered environment.

Also you get some interesting random effects that occur Random events (which can be disabled) include a Borg Cube, the Crystalline Entity, Gomtuu and other powerful craft, most of which take a fleet to destroy.

Overall I still play this game! I find it really enjoyable! :) Unlike most RTS's I was used to you have to juggle 4 opponents while you play.

Great little game that is hard to find!

5/5
