Album Notes
Possum Dixon: Rob Zabrecky, Robert O'Sullivan, Celso Chavez.
Additional personnel: Rich Treuel, Josh Freese, Byron Reynolds (drums); "Sneaky" Pete Tomlinson (percussion); Cathy Cooper.
Recorded in Los Angeles, California in Spring 1995.
Possum Dixon dive into their second major label release with all the Los Angeles-surf-New Wave energy of their first record, and then some. Backed by a new drummer, Byron Reynolds, the band sounds tighter and more cohesive than previously, lending a chic '80's pop-style twist to bassist-vocalist Rob Zabrecky's contemporary, often cryptic lyrics.
On their debut album, the group's songs focused on the subject of lousy jobs. Here, they deal mainly with difficult relationships--as on "Skid Marks," when Zabrecky sings, "Well, I'm falling all over you like a bad jacket/Last night something went wrong. What the hell happened?" This kind of ironic, tongue-in-cheek view of modern romance is a running theme throughout the record. STAR MAPS combines this perspective with Possum Dixon's quirky New Wave sensibility, most notable in the Cars- and Devo-reminiscent keyboard work and the clean, strong guitar riffs.
