While LOAD and its sequel RELOAD, Metallica's final studio offerings of the '90s, found the band expanding their approach in what fans called "maturation" and detractors called "mellowing out," the band's first album of the 21st century is a powerful retrenchment and call-to-arms for the heavy metal faithful. Not since the bygone days of MASTER OF PUPPETS (and perhaps not even then) has Metallica sounded this furiously unrelenting.
There's virtually no letup from the frenetic musical mayhem of the appropriately titled ST. ANGER, and nary a power ballad in sight, as the guitars blare and drums rage from one gut-assaulting tune into the next at a breakneck pace. One is reminded of the pure sonic fury of vintage Motorhead, the only band before Metallica to convincingly combine metal tonalities with punk energy. The brilliantly clear production is a blessing that maximizes every bone-crunching riff and jackhammer drum hit for an intensified sucker-punch that will leave even longtime fans reeling with the sheer heaviness of it all. ST. ANGER is surely one of the most effective metal albums of the early '00s, and a bracing lesson for all the nu-metal brats on how it's meant to be done.

Classic Metallica, minus the guitar solos. No solos in the CD, but no ballads either. Take Kill em all, Lightning, Puppets, And Justice, Smashe em all together and add Rob on bass, and you get St. Anger! Thats it, pure and simple. Buy it, Listen to it, Love it. Or James will make Rob eat your head!!!

I have throughly enjoyed the cd. I like the fact that you can watch them perform the songs in their own back yard.

I'm a big Metallica fan since Ride The Lightning was released. I remember hearing about Cliff Burton's death while standing by my locker at high school. I have liked every cd, even the over-produced Load cds. I guess with the over produced sound of Load, they wanted to go in the extreme opposite direction with St. Anger. The production is horrible. This has the distinction of having the worst drum mix of any cd, ever. I dont even think they mic'd the drums. On the bright side, they have Rick Rubin producing their next album!

The price on this album was awesome. When I received the album through fast mailing, it was in excellent condition. Everything was in tact and no scratches on the cd and dvd that were inside. I give this product a five star rating.

3 out of 10.
Metallica is the greatest band of all time... however this album sucks balls!
I only bought it because I am a HUGE fan, and just have it to keep the collection up to date. I may use it as a coaster at my bar though. All other Metallica albums are awesome, St. Anger not so much.

Plain and simple...Metallica returns to it's garage roots with the vengence! Crunchy guitar with deep lyrics make this album a must own for all fans of the genre.

  It's a good album

In my opinion, it's not really what you expect from Metallica. If you are looking for the solos and super shredding displayed on albums like Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, you won't find it that much on St. Anger. It's a different style they use where the lyrics are stronger than the music. I like the album but it's near the bottom of my rankings of Metallica albums. If you have any desire to buy it, however, I recommend you buying it because it is worth it.

  Metallica-St Anger
Review created: 02/05/09

This was an average Metallica CD to me. Listened to St Anger first, as I'd heard it on the radio, and of course loved it. The rest of the CD sounds like a continuation of St Anger to me. I was hoping for some individual songs, like their older albums...

  ST ANGER
Review created: 10/22/08

this disc is a million miles away from classics such as "master of the puppets"
or " ride the lightning".
long time metallica fans may be dissapointed at St anger, because this disc is a total 360 for metallica. gone are kirk hammets leads, and the overall sound
is garage- like. thanks to producer bob rock. metallica s jason newsted had just quit right before the disc was made, so they were without a bassist.

the disc isnt a total waste...opening tracks like " frantic" is seething with white hot venom. the guitars are viscious, razor sharp. sweet amber is also a good track.
St anger is worth buying..at used price, and a must have for die hard metallica fans.

I am a Metallica fan and wanted this particular album. It does not have the polish of previous Metallica music, it seemed more like uncut session tapes than music that had undergone production. It is a new direction for the band and sometimes that is needed when things get stale.

  AWESOME 'TALLICA!!
Review created: 06/25/07
by:

This CD, in my opinion, was much better than most of the stuff on Load & Reload (barring a few classics). This album is agressive, raw, with heavy riffing and pounding drums. The new musical inspiration of Rober Trujillo is amazing. This is a great album for a new fan (of metal or metallica) or a die hard, hardcore fan! Everything set aside, ST. ANGER kicks ass & is a monumental release for metal in the 00's!

  Metallica - St. Anger
Review created: 04/02/07(updated 04/02/07)
by:

St. Anger is an amazing album period. There are some Metallica fans that will no doubt miss the intricate solos from the "Mater Of Puppets" era; but there is no room for solos on this punishing album. The first two tracks alone are worth the price of admission. It is raw, fast, and furious from the get go. The guitars are tuned very low and the drumming is some of the hardest and fastest that we've heard from Metallica since the spine-tingling final section of "One" all those years ago.

The making of the album was documented in the "Some Kind of Monster" documentary and in some ways, watching the movie will enhance your appreciation of this album and everything it took to make it.

A recently sober James Hetfield sounds fresh and rejuvenated on these songs; he sings great and his lyrics are as hard-hitting as the music. Not to be outdone, Lars Ulrich shows us again why he is one of the most amazing drummers in the history of recorded music. Some of the songs blend together a bit and lack that "stand out" quality, but the ones that do stand out, punch you in the face with hardcore metal ecstasy.

(I would highly reccommend buying the CD/DVD version of the album that includes the band in rehersal with their new bass player going through every song on the album in Dolby Digital 5.1. Their new bass player, Robert Trujillo is phenomenal and due to his finger-picking style, is the closest thing Metallica will ever get to having the "Cliff Burton style" back in the band.)

Highlights: "Frantic", "St. Anger", "Shoot Me Again"

- Jason Murray

  Metallica My favorite band
Review created: 11/09/06

What I like most about the St Anger album is how James, Lars, Kirk, and Robert all put so much into the album. Like they said in the movie "we made music with anger in a healthy way" Now I know that Metallica has been through a few bass players on the past but that doesnt make them a bad band. They have created some of the most memorible music in the past 20 years that I know alot of us will never forget. For expamle the "Black Album" I memorized every song on that album just so I could sing along with them. It has been one of my dreams to meet the band in person being in the Military I never know when I can get the chance to take the time to talk of even listen to them. Alot of inspiration has came to me from this album. I mean who else would film a videom from San Quintin. I know that took some imagination and alot of guts to be around all those convicts but at the same time those convicts are people too. And Metallica knows that. That is one of the main reasons I have so much respect for them. So it is with a hopeful goodbye that I say ROCK ON METALLICA.

  Metallica st anger cd/dvd
Review created: 06/09/06

I purchased this cd/dvd of metallica because i have been a long time fan of the band.I heard this album was supposed to go back to their roots, and be a little heavier.I couldnt resist buying this awesome paperback cd because i think i paid less than a dollar for it ,which is amazing.I like the fact that it is a paperback covered cd/dvd.The cd/dvd arrived in a very timely as well. The only thing i can say i didnt like was that the item wasnt new and sealed, but it was in excellent condition. That is why i am giving this review an excellent (5).I purchased this item to sell in my e-bay store the 2112 rock shop where i have cds of this nature. .
