Hip to be Square

I had heard that square and contra dancing were making a comeback, but, please! That old stuff?. Then, a fellow professor asked me if I had any music or books on Square Dancing. She wanted to get a dance group going at her church. I wrinkled my nose up at that corny stuff, but said I'd get back to her. I am the Chair of a college dance department where we are way too elegant to actually admit to having ever partaken of these old farmer tunes. We worship classical music and ballet. We are truly cool and very Hip. But, then I found this CD and played it in my Prius. I began to transform; smiling wider and wider and slapping my knee with my hand as if I were driving my pickup out to the Barn. This seems like bluegrass with that wonderful crisp speed and steel twang. This CD is without calls and covers some well known Square dance songs. What fun! There is the excitement of potential energy in it and, as a choreographer, all kinds of things start shaking in my imagination. The pieces are forthright in direction and construction. Solid, driving and with wonderful identifiable tunes. Not just nostalgia either, because it makes you want to move in a good way; a healthy way.. All possible stars! Take your corners!
