One of the best-written pieces of television EVER. The characters are clearly defined, the dialog smart, the camaraderie endearing. I SO want to be around people like that. I recommend this to anyone, sports fan or not. Interesting that several of the cast members went on to be in such winners as West Wing, Six Feet Under, Desperate Housewives (well, this one I'm not so fond of). This is a keeper and a "let's watch the whole thing again"-er. Carolyn
Would love to tell you all about this DVD set, as it is no longer available in stores and therefore difficult to find. Unfortunately, although I've been charged for it and have waited more than a month, it has never arrived, I have never heard from the seller, and I've not even heard back yet about my claim. The only thing I can tell you is that I'll think twice before using ebay or half.com again.
I think ABC pulled this series way too soon. With all the garbage that is on TV these days and even back when this show was on it baffles the mind why ABC wouldn't support a show that won 3 Emmy's. I can't be sure but I don't think I ever saw this show air on ABC. I remember seeing a commercial here or there, but it seemed like they always changed the air time or date and couldn't lock onto an audience. Whatever the case I think they "fumbled" away a great show with an incredible cast. Just look at were some of these actors have went on to.
"Sports Night", unfortunately, lasted only 2 seasons. I'm sure that it would have lasted much longer on a cable station. In my opinion it was much better than "Scrubs", another 30 minute comedy that is in (I think) its 5th or 6th season. The idea was more unique (how many hospital shows are there?) and the writing was better (by Aaron Sorkin, who created "West Wing"). It wasn't as 'goofy', didn't have the physical comedy that appeals to a broader range of viewers, so it got 'canned'. Sorkin, who also wrote "The American President", rebounded and went on to bigger and better things.
The product is fine. The transaction was slow, meaning it took 2 1/2 weeks to get to me. I recieved no tracking number or even estimated shipment date during this process. I tried contacting the seller who then took their sweet time getting back to me. When they did get back to me, the product had finally arrived and their message had a condescending "Its there, so stop complaining" feel to it. It sure wasn't here when I wrote them several days earlier, AFTER waiting 2 weeks.
I came late to the party on Sports Night and did not start watching until midway through the second season. This show was brilliantly written, and look what the actors went on to do in their careers. I love the DVD set and it reminds me what a shame it was that it was cancelled. Although, I guess if it had kept going Sorkin may not have done West Wing.
I bought this set as a Xmas present for my son who had enjoyed the series when it ran on television. He was delighted with the gift and has enjoyed watching it ith his friends and family. Excellent condition and arrived in timely fashion. Thank you.
I loved this series when it was on TV and when I found it on EBAY I knew I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT!! If you like ESPN's SportCenter, then this is for you. It's a great behind the scenes look at what the sports casters life!!
It's funny & seious at the same time. I guess they call that a dramedy. I bought that DVD collection, because I loved show when it was first on for it's short run & it's hard to catch reruns on cable. They were on Bravo on Thursday nights intermintately.
I watched this show regularly when it was on TV and needed to see it again. My wife never heard of it and was not interested until she saw the first episode. Everytime we started watching, we didn't want to quit. This is a great show and one season just wasn't enough.
This was truely a perfect series that was cut short before its time. The writing is fantastic and the cast is untouchable. The sportsfan would love the series and the nonsportfans would still enjoy it as well.
Sports Night never caught my attention when it was on because I hate sports. But after loving Aaron Sorkin's seasons of the West Wing I decided to give it a try. And you can tell it's his show because it has his fingerprints all over it. The parallels to the West Wing by some characters are eerie, it's like he just put them in a different setting. Despite it's being a half hour this is more like a drama then a sitcom.
