SPINNER originated as the soundtrack to Derek Jarman's final film, "Glitterbug."
Brian Eno's 1995 collaboration with ex-Public Image Limited bassist/producer Jah Wobble is of a piece with Eno's partnership with U2 as the Passengers, applying his idiosyncratic talents to mid-'90s dance music. A third of SPINNER consists of solo keyboard pieces by Eno which would not sound out of place on any of his ambient records, but the rest marries his trademark soundscapes to Wobble's booming, reggae-influenced bass and the polyrhythmic drums of Can's Jaki Liebezeit, with others providing minimal assistance on guitar, percussion, and, on the centerpiece "Unusual Balance," wordless vocals. Until the last three lengthy tracks, the short pieces explore a rhythm or sound only as long as it's fruitful, thereby avoiding the tedium of many ambient records.

Editorial Reviews
...The 10 tracks contain echoes of everything from Bach fugues to 1970's German space music, but it's all done with Eno's customary subtlety and attention to detail...
Option (03/01/1996)

...Friendly synth sounds and Wobble's loopy bass beats wax and wane, without an overreliance on techno-trickery to get to the point: that the flow of the music is as key as the details or melodic signposts. - Rating: A-
Entertainment Weekly (11/17/1995)

4 Stars - Very Good - ...Wobble indulges his taste for dub bass lines and Middle Eastern melodies while seamlessly incorporating Eno's work. Remarkably, the results never sound forced or inappropriate.
Down Beat (10/01/1996)

...these tone poems, anchored in place by [Jah] Wobble's bass, are as obtuse as anything on ANOTHER GREEN WORLD and as icey as the APOLLO SOUNDTRACKS...
