Spin, probably the wrong title for a decent film.

This movie is most appropriate for a teenager, probably a girl, although it does appeal to my spouse, who is decidedly well past her teenage years. In the late 1940s or early 1950s, A young Tucson boy looses his parents to a small plane accident. He is initially raised by is somewhat emotionally distant Uncle, an pilot officer with one of the military branches. The boy's care is passed off to the caretaker couple who manage the small ranch on which the boy lives. A decade later, the boy, now a young man, has his share of emotional problems and has become somewhat isolated from his friends and family. The Uncle returns for a long stay, and the young man learns to fly the Piper Cub he has inherited from his parents. This, and the entry of a girlfriend in his life force the young man to take responsibility for his life and begin the process of becoming a mature adult. The flying is accurately portrayed with only a few subtle errors. The story line is a little weak, but the acting is quite well done. Stanley Tucci does a remarkably good job of playing the emotional disconnected Uncle and Dana Delany immediately connects with the audience as the surrogate mother. The viewer will recognize other cast members, and they all play their parts well. Like life, the story ends with a few necessary loose ends, a serious situation resolved, but with hope for the future. The movie is rated as a PG-13 but borders on a G rating. It is quite subtle for pre-teens. The photography is excellent, something the writer of this review initially overlooked. As an airline pilot who has flown a Piper Cub exactly like the one portrayed in the movie, I tend to miss the obvious and focus on the details. Where most movies involving airplanes are poorly done, this movie is well done. If only for the cinematography, this movie is worth a look.

A New Spin on Classic Romance
Review created: 11/05/06

Spin, is about a white boy named Eddie who lost both of his parents in a plane crash when he was young and a Mexican girl who's mother died when she was young. Francesca (the girl) obviously liked Eddie when they were young. After many years of seperation due to Francesca moving, the two meet back up in high school. Now the two teens you can tell have a thing for one another. In addition to this, Eddie has to struggle with learning to fly or not considering that his parents died in a plane crash. However, he comes from a long line of flyer's. This is a good movie if you like a classic romance story but with the twist of a bi-racial relationship in the 1950's.

This movie is excellent. The first time i watched it, i saw it on television. I remember being impressed as i watched it, but not overly obsessed. Then, as the day went on, i found myself thinking about the film over and over. There are so many intense themes running through the movie. Young love, Mexican American predjudices, alcohol abuse, greif, hope, it's all there. After that day, i had to look for it on ebay. I received it in great condition, very satisfied with my purchase.
