The Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black (2004, Reinforced Hardcover)

I decided to buy these books that are for kids because I really like to read fantasy books. It looked good at a store and I origionaly bought the first book. Then I went on line and bought the whole lot.
The books are well written and fast reading. Pictures in it really help with putting a character in its content. Very good books Highly recommended to both children and adults.

You would have to look long and hard to find a series that not only appeals to but is appropriate for all ages.
These books were just lovely, our children couldn't wait for us to turn the page and tell them what happened next.
Spooky but not too scarey makes them great for even the littlest ones that your reading to.
Every family should have this series and pass it down thru the ages.
A classic just waiting to happen.

Great for early readers! Chapters are short , so great for before bed reading as long as they are not easily frightened. My son LOVES these stories!

Let me start by saying that my 2 oldest sons are in 3rd grade and 2nd grade. I bought these books to read to them because they are both avid readers and I think it also helps aid in comprehension, recall and fluency when children are still read to at their ages.

We read each book in order and on different nights. Each book took me just over 1 hour to read, even with pauses to allow them to look over pictures and predict what would happen next or answer thought questions I would ask them. There were plenty of gorgeously detailed illustrations to supplement the story. The books were fast paced, well written, very well thought-out, engaging, funny and descriptive. My children enjoyed them immensely.

The only thing I did not like about them was some of the language used (cr** for example) and some of the name calling in a couple of the volumes. Other than that, these books were superb.

These books are great, rich in detail, and written at a level that children can read and understand! I have been reading them out loud to my students since they came out. The movie pales in comparison!

Bought the book set for my 10 yr old. He read them in 2 days. Keeps children interested in reading and away from the television.

I like to keep up with children's literature since I am a teacher. I saw the movie with my grandson. We got the books so we could read them together. They are well written and fun to read. I like the short installments that will help the kids feel they are achieving something. The drawings and illustrations are very good and fit the book.

the reason i bought the series to understand what will happen in the movie. the movie is already out to theatres. When i saw the commerical about it and it looked very interesting and very suspicious at the same time. so i began to think about if i read the book and i can compare the differences between the books and the movie. so i decided to buy the series. Once i read the first part of the book i am already hooked. I was wanting to know what happened after the book until i reached the end of the book five. the ending was very sweet, and very heartbreaking in a good way. the action is very interesting and fun. I used to believe in fairies but i hated trolls because the trolls give me creeps, and still gives me the creeps ha. but anyway, i love the books i thought it would be good for my daughter when she grows up. i would like to teach her about the theme of the books and to enjoy read the books. I cannot wait to watch movie. I hope it will be good as the books!

This is an enchanting and engaging set of books about three children who go to visit a great aunt and find a book telling them about the fairies and woodland creatures inhabiting the land around them.
What child would not go out to explore?

The quintet is very well-written with an engaging story line and contains a realism to the characters of both worlds. There is an innocence of spirit to this book not found in the Harry Potter series making it appropriate for 3rd grade children reading at or higher than grade level at this time of year, and up! It is of a high interest level and is a quintet of chapter books that give children both the enjoyment of a good story as well as the satisfaction of finishing a five-book set much more accessible than the Harry Potter books.

The publisher's age recommendations for this book are spot on.

It would also be appropriate for adult remedial readers and/or ESL students because of its high interest level and illustration of words not commonly encountered in conversation, such as goblin, boggart, and other mythical mystical creatures common to western mythology.

The books are filled with lovely Arthur Rackham-inspired pen-and-ink drawings, both full-page and cameo. In addition to the color drawings on the front of each, each book also has a full-page color frontispiece; as a bonus are the fanciful backs of the books hinting at what might be found within. Even the box holds surprises: the spines of the books lined up in order show a gryphon and a dragon in gold, and, if you look carefully, you just might surprise a Household Boggart lurking behind the shelved books.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, so much so that I read the entire set straight through.

I bought this in 2005 and read it right away with an eye to getting a couple of other sets for eBay; however, there was not much interest in it at the time, so I kept only this one set. Now that a movie is out, these will be flying off the shelves at top price; now is the time to pick this up, as the movie experience, as well as media literacy, is enhanced by having read the book before seeing the movie, as Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code readers will tell you!

I also have the large companion book, which is a real gem, a wonderful "interactive" book with beautiful drawings and descriptions, fold-outs and pull-outs throughout.

Fun stories, great pictures. My four year old and I are really enjoying this series. The boxed set is a great way to keep these well made books together and looking great over time.

I loved the story that is set for the children of today's households to really be able to relate to. The children are lovable and the story is a similar version to a child hood favorite that I grew up with. This is a great book because all 5 books are in this one hard covered version. This is great for older children but I prefer the individual books for my younger readers. They seemed a bit intimidated by the thickness of this book were as the simplified individual books are less intimidating. Still, it has the same great story!

My kids 11 (daughter and 7 year old (son) love to hear these before bed and read them on their own too... Great for any age.

Normally I try to encourage children to read the book before they watch the movie version. With my 9 yr old grandson, he couldn't wait to read the other books in the series. He'd visit his school library every week looking for any of the volumes and once asked me to take him to the public library to see if he could find the books there. The series is full of imaginative details, that it wouldn't be hard to create mental pictures as you read. When a child is always in search of a good story like Spiderwick, I was more that willing to buy him the whole set. Funny thing is, he started from the first book even though he's read them. A must read for the adventure seeker.

This series is a fun easy read. It is fun for kids and adults alike. The books have great illustrations and a captivating story.
