  Spider-Man & Spider-Man II [2002 & 2004]

Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN

~ Young Peter Parker [Tobey Maguire] is bitten by a radioactive spider during a science field trip. A typically awkward and quiet straight 'A' student, Parker's life changes when he discovers he has powers similar to that of a spider, only far greater. Suddenly he is popular on campus and the stunning Mary Jane Watson [Kirsten Dunst] takes an interest in him. After a bungled robbery, Parker's uncle Ben [Cliff Robertson] is killed and Parker blames himself for not stopping the killer when he could have. With only his Aunt May to look after him, Parker decides it's time to grow up. To quote Stan Lee, creator of the original Marvel comic book: "with great power comes great responsibilty". Parker invents an alter-ego and Spider-Man is born.

Initially he tackles small-time crooks while working at the Daily Bugle as a freelance photographer, ironically earning a living selling photos of Spider-Man to the temperamental J Jonah Jameson [J K Simmons] - until his first real villain arrives, Norman Osborn or the Green Goblin [Willem Dafoe]. Parker is friends with his son, Harry [James Franco], and this makes things difficult. In fact, Parker's double-life begins to get in the way of family, friends, work and his relationship with MJ ~

Raimi has brought the Marvel hero effortlessly onto screen. Nuff said!!!

SPIDER-MAN II

"Face it, Tiger, you just hit the jackpot", Mary Jane Watson

~ Dialogue straight out of the comic book ensuring that this sequel is going to be well worth the wait! OK, not quite as good as the first - sequels seldom are - but a valiant effort on the part of Sam Raimi.

Here we have the next big Super Villain, Dr Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus [Alfred Molina], who is about to further complicate Spider-Man's [Tobey Maguire] already failing personal life: Parker is experiencing financial difficulties and his studies are slipping. To top it all off, Mary Jane [Kirsten Dunst] is now engaged to astronaut John Jameson, son of Parker's overbearing newspaper editor, Jonah. Things just go from bad to worse for the web-slinger.

Meanwhile, following the death of his father [the Green Goblin], Harry Osborn has now now taken over Oscorp Industries and is in business talks with Dr Otto Octavius. The Doctor, Parker's idol, has created a set of mechanical arms that are impervious to heat and magnetism; the experiment goes wrong and the arms become fused to the spine of Octavius, taking complete control of the doctor both mentally and physically.

Aunt May is later captured and taken hostage by Dr Octopus. Spider-Man too falls prey to capture and is delivered to Harry, where his true identity is under threat. How much can one guy take?

'Spider-Man 2' is all about choices for Peter Parker: lose his alter-ego and concentrate on number one or continue with the responsibility he chose after the death of Uncle Ben ~

Raimi has skillfully recreated the classic scene - panel-for-panel - from Amazing Spider-Mam #50, Spider-Man No More, written by Stan Lee, pencilled by John Romita, and inked by Mickey Dimeo. Here Parker is seen leaving a rainy alleyway where his discarded costume hangs from the throat of a garbage can. Raimi has concentrated on the Parker who is forced to deal with actual everyday problems in Spider-Man 2, one we can all sympathize with.

  Great Stuff!

Both of these movies are great! Spiderman one detailing the origins of Spider man is a classic comic book tale brought to life. The expansion of the ideas in the tale that come from Spiderman 2 only serve to furthur flesh out the charactors even more.

If you are giddy for Spiderman 3 and haven't picked up both of these this is the perfect set.

  Spider-Man 1 & 2 (2005, DVD)
Review created: 12/05/06

Spider Man 1 was just outstanding! How it was directed, the special effects, Toby (spiderman) not realizing his powers and how to utilize it for the good. It really cause him to mature and have great compassion for humanity.

Part 2. was good, but it just didn't express the same excitement like the first movie. The fact of the enemy being some type of octopus was just a bit too much out of character.
