  Spelling Problems??? SOLVED!!!!!!

After using and perusing several different home education spelling curricula, we've decided that Spelling Power is a quick and easy solution to spelling difficulties. Following the easy diagnostic testing method, students begin exactly where their spelling abilities are lacking. Each list in the book focuses on 1 spelling rule.

Because a LONG-time home educator had already used this curriculum and worked out all the bugs with her children, we use her method which is a little different than the book's directions state. (I did NOT even bother reading the first few very overwhelming chapters of the book, we just jumped in following her suggestions.)

We DO the diagnostic test to determine on which list to start the student. (I'm using this with a 2nd and a 4th grader). Then the student is tested on each list after being told the spelling rule for said list. HOWEVER, any time that the student misses 5 words, we immediately stop (even in the middle of a list) and use the study method from the book (write 5 times, imagine writing word on a black board as I spell it correctly outloud, etc.) to work towards mastering ONLY those words. Then we add those words to the beginning of all future lists until they are mastered. We do not study the lists, just the missed words... limited to 5.

We do our spelling like a "jumping spelling bee"... another tip from a seasoned home educator. Each student stands on a step stool when they are spelling their word. IF they correctly spell their word, they get to JUMP off of the step stool and then get back in line (our line has only 2 currently). Anyway, if they miss, then they can NOT jump off the stool, just step slowly off. It sounds SO silly, but it is just the thing to help spelling not be so stressful and serious. We've also tossed baby marshmallows into correct spellers' mouths as an added bonus.

Like I said, quick, easy 15 minutes TOP!!! Even better... no more tears! Hope this information helps ease your home education process!!! :)

Blessings,
Certified Teacher & Texas Home Educator

This book keeps kids attention, and the time you use it is short. You really only need to do it 15 minutes a day. My kids 4th and 6th grade are using it and doing well. The study method is ingenius! I would use it with my 1st and 2nd graders, but didn't know you could. The book says use at age 8 and above. But you really could use it for a younger child. I use a seperate vocab book and all is well in homeschool land... Don't hesitate. You will use this book.

Spelling Power is an excellent spelling program that enables young children to learn spelling rules easily and quickly in just 5 minutes a day. My students love it.They love it because it is quick and because after just a week of using the program the can see the differences in their own work. That's awesome.

I bought Spelling Power because I have used Spelling Power for my children's home schooling before, but was in need of a new copy. I use this curriculum because of its ease of usage, and it teaches the information well. I have not found another spelling curriculum that compares with Spelling Power.

We are new to homeschool. I had tried other programs with no sucess, they were boring. My daughter now ask to do spelling. the system works! It can be done in minutes a day and the program will take them though high school. the work book isn't necessary but it is helpful. we use it and like it. i recommend it to everyone. it also supports independent work, which has been one of our issues. if your looking for a spelling program this is really the way to go. even if your child just needs a boost in public school spelling work with it over the summer. it is truly amazing. i thank Go i found it!

Look no further for a Spelling Curriculum
Review created: 10/09/08

I am thrilled with Spelling Power. The list are common words that your child will use in every day vocabulary. Other spelling cirriculums were uncommon words and very difficult. With other cirriculums we were spending weeks on a list until they knew how to spell the words. Spelling power keeps you moving but stops on words they dont know how to spell right off. If it was a fluke that they got the word right, dont worry they come back around in other list. This is the Spelling curriculum for our family!

Very complete program. I can use just ONE spelling curriculum for all my homeschooled children ranging in grades 2nd through 11th..:) Gotta love that! Very methodical approach with no fluff.

I love this book. It is everything I need to teach my children spelling and so much more. This book offers an organized, tactile approach to spelling. I like that the book doesn't make the kids study the words they already know and lets them progress at their own rate. Wish I would have bought this book sooner!

I have just started Spelling Power and I love it! My daughter seems to really like it to. She has trouble with spelling and I think this program will really help. The book is huge and looks a bit overwhelming at first. The program is really easy to understand. I also bought the cd which helps explain step by step.

I am very excited about this program. I checked it out of our library and I cannot wait to receive the copy that I purchased on ebay. I already tested my son in 2nd grade and found that he is spelling on the sixth grade level. The awesome part about this program is that it will carry us all the way through high school. This is the first and last spelling program I will ever buy!

  Spelling Power

I love Spelling Power. I have a son who has used it for 3 years now. He was a very poor speller and nothing seemed to work. There were always tears when the spelling came out. He has increased by almost 2 grade levels each year.It is nice because it goes at the childs pace instead of the publishers.I just bought another one for my friends son who is having trouble spelling. It has saved us money too because you buy one book for their whole school career.

  Powerful spelling curriculum
Review created: 12/05/07

I love the way this book allows you to test your child for the right level to start at. I was struggling to figure out which level book to buy for my 5 year old, and kept getting things that were too easy. It is also completely adaptable to your life and your child's learning style and abilities. For my son, he's at a 5th grade spelling level, but is just learning to write. So I can quiz him verbally and he loves it - we work on his handwriting in other ways so it doesn't discourage him during his spelling lesson. The lessons focus on JUST spelling, rather than including grammar or reading comprehension. That helps with a child who is at a spelling level either much higher or much lower than their other subjects. The book will also last for years so I don't have to buy another one!

  Spelling Power

My son was several grades behind in spelling, even though he excelled in every other subject. We tried a different ELA curriculum each year, but he kept having trouble. A good friend suggested this curriculum, and we are thrilled. He has used it for several years, and now he scores above average in spelling on standardized tests. (For whatever they are worth...)The main thing is that he no longer minds writing, because he knows how to spell what he is thinking. We LOVE Spelling Power. We use it in addition to our ELA curriculum. Now I use it with all my kids and they all excel with it.
