I've been a fan of the Xanth books (and Piers Anthony) for several years. My dad introduced me to the original Xanth series, starting with this book. Chameleon changes from being incredibly smart but horribly ugly, to being blindingly beautiful but as dumb as they come. Her quest is to find a spell that will stop this change. Her companion is seeking to find his talent. Join their adventure. These characters come back in several other Xanth novels too!
