Speed Racer (Blu-ray Disc, 2008)

I really enjoyed the movie. Watched it with my great nephew and he liked it too. It is a little confusing in the beginning, but in the end you get the whole jist of it. It is a lot like the cartoon that was on years ago, if that's bad I'm confused. It's gotten so many bad reviews that most people I know haven't seen it. Fun movie.

This WB release is packed with action, astounding special effects (mixing the real with the virtual) and intriguing story lines. Only because of all of these three aspects, it's worth a watch. It's a little children-focused, but entertaining for the whole family.

It has not much to do with the innocence and the simplicity of the original Japanese cartoon series and this is one more reason fans of this character should see the movie - to judge by themselves.

Basically, this is a story of a little boy who is born and raised by a family of car and speed lovers. They truly believe in the joy and in the real spirit of the racing. Along the way, they end up facing the tough reality of the sport business - competitors, results and championships are determined by the industry, the money men, by the interest of big money corporations. There's no such thing as fair results, authentic competition. Winners and losers are previously chosen before they even compete. Speed Racer's family is even led to believe that the loss of their oldest children by a car accident was caused by this called corporate greed.

As Speed and his family are determined to bring the power down, proving that talent and the love for the speed are capable of anything that money just can't buy, mysteries unfold throughout the story and everything end up just fine. While some people might call this a predictable, boring and childish flick, I call it the best live-action movie of 2008 so far. Undoubtedly a five-star rating.

Blu-Ray is Amazing! The clarity, in this movie, is beyond anything I've seen thus far on blu-ray, not to say that other blu-ray titles aren't clear or awesome looking, but this just has such a polish to it, maybe it's the cg mixed with live action that made it look so good. Regardless, I had read a lot of bad reviews when this movie came out in theaters. One good review however, mentioned that this is a live action cartoon, and in order to enjoy the movie it's best to go in thinking this way. Seeing how much I enjoyed the original animated show, I turned off my critical thinking, and went in with the mentality mentioned above, and to expect the crazy races, with the unbelievable maneuvering cars, gadgets, weapons, plot, that the original had. During the movie, I just had a big smile on my face...it was exactly like the original anime, insane, eye popping, gorgeous looking CG, great cast, good story, a real fun movie, and a true love for cars and racing. This movie went beyond what I expected. My hat goes off to the Wachowski Brothers for making a movie about an old, forgotten show, that not many people ever watched. You can tell that they adored, the original material, and honored it by putting it on film.

I must admit that I know, or knew rather, very little about the story or history of Speed Racer- and his TV series - and maybe that is why I enjoyed this movie so much. Although, this is still a different type of situation where one who was a big fan of the shows might be seriously critical of every little detail of the turned movie. I don't believe anyone who considers themselves truly knowledgeable about Tatsuo Yoshida's work can say that this was not represented well on the big screen. I'm now intrigued to go back and check out some episodes of Speed Racer.

That aside, as far as it being a movie and a work of art, I would give this movie high marks in both categories. For it being a movie, it was nice to see something so different as far as the approach to making it go. Also, having such an incredible cast makes it all the more intriguing. I don't see anyone else having portrayed any of these characters any better than the cast that was hired to do so.

On an artistic level, it is extremely hard to think of any other movie that comes close to being in the same league. I did not see The Matrix, but I would say that anyone who liked Sin City for its cinematography and graphic elements, would love Speed Racer. The use of bright photography that's added behind a green screen makes for a far more dramatic effect.

Take the artistic elements of this movie, and put it together with the amazing cast (both looks and talent) and throw it together with a very different but coherent plot, and you've got yourself an extremely enjoyable movie that is definitely worth seeing. And seeing at the theater no less! My hats off to The Wachowski Brothers, and the rest of the cast and crew for putting together something different for a change.

Video is impressive, lots of eye popping color, really is the best example of blue ray to date. I use this as a demonstration disc for my home theatre.
Audio is just ok, can't figure out why they didn't use lossless.
Kids will like storyline, adults will tolerate, perhaps enjoy more if you were a fan of the original show. Be prepared to see racing where the laws of physics don't apply.

The video output via HDMI is amazing for this movie. The movie was made for HD and the blu ray delivers. Audio on the other hand did not live up to the expectations. You get the standard 5.1 dolby. This movie would have rocked with a DTS HD or Dolby True HD track. A shame because the audio would have complemented the video very nicely. As far as the movie goes, it could have been shorter, the car racing scenes are awesome.

WEEL, FOR STARTERS I SAW THIS MOVIE 4 TIMES INT THEATERS. IT HOUGHT AT THAT POINT THERE WAS NO WAY TO GET A BETTER VIEWING. SPEED RACER WAS GIVEN TO ME AS A GIFT. THIS WAS QUITE AN EXPERIENCE TO WATCH IT IN THE COMFORT OF MY OWN HOME AND TO WATCH TI ON BLURAY.

I rented this for the kids and loved it so much I wanted to buy it in Bluray. It is visually so interested that I can't stop watching it when it is on. There is so much going on in each scene that you can watch it again and again and still not see all the action. And this is from someone who does care much for action movies or car racing.

Loved the colors and action. Good movie especially for kids. Storyline could have flowed a little better but overall enjoyable.

The story is not great but if you dont focus on the lack of story and focus on the fast paced action and vortex of colors then this is a very enjoyable veiwing expirience. A must have for anyone wanting to show off thier HDTV + Blu-Ray combo.

The names are the same but the show is very different. This is not the cartoon I remember seeing on Saturday morning. What was created as animation is now a high effects action story by the Wachowski brothers.

I like it, just to see the teems get all into the action. But I luv the quailty of the movie on blu-Ray. The family has problems like all of us, they fuss, get on with life and come together when bad things happen.

I bought the movie three weeks ago and was immediately impressed with the number of features available on this inexpensive movie. It has a 1M-pixel camera, video camera, and speakerphone. The NewPhone's size is perfect for carrying in a pocket and the battery has a pretty good lifespan of roughly 4 hours. My only complaint is that the menu system on the phone makes you click four times before you can find someone in the address book, set an alarm, or perform a additional functions. Other phones I've owned have simpler menus and get you to important features easily. Overall, I'd recommend the phone if you're on a budget.

This rates in the top five worst movies I have ever seen. Not worth the shipping even if it was free.

This production does for Japanese Anime what the Matrix Trilogy did to re-vitalize science fiction. Spectacular use of color and special effects, with a great back story woven in. Terrific genre acting and eye popping visuals. Worth multiple viewing. The Warchowski Bros hit a grand slam again!

This movie had interesting special effects...that's about it. The story sucked, the cast sucked and everything else was mediocre. I'm certain there will be a sequel because these are the same people who couldn't leave the hit Matrix alone...had to do sequels. I was told not to waste my money, but, I bought it, and on Blu-ray of course...bad mistake.
