The plot of "Speechless" vaguely parallels the highly publicized relationship between political gurus James Carville (Bill Clinton's campaign manager) and Mary Matalain (of the George Bush camp). The producers, Geena Davis and husband Renny Harlin, say that the script was written by Robert King in 1989, three years before the 1992 presidential campaign.
