Album Notes This Limited Edition box includes many rare photos and extensive liner notes, as well as alternate takes, false starts, session talk and unreleased material and the "master takes" of each track. The British label Ace has released a 6 CD version of this set with many more alternate takes, "...sometimes barely discernible from one another," according to the August ICE. The 2 companies have swapped some sets to cover special orders. Annotation on both sets are identical, including a discography by Ray Topping.. Personnel includes: Little Richard (vocals, piano); Danny Carmichael (vocals); Thomas Harwell (guitar); Lee Allen, Alvin Tyler (saxophone); Wilbert Smith (tenor saxophone); Huey "Piano" Smith, Luke "Fats" Gonder (piano); Jimmy Rice (bass); Earl Palmer, Charles Connor (drums). Producer: Bumps Blackwell, Art Rupe. Compilation producer: Billy Vera. Recorded between 1955 and 1964. Booklet includes essays by Rob Finnis and Rick Coleman. Each disc also includes liner notes by Ray Topping. Digitally remastered by Bob Jones and Gordon Skene (A&M Mastering Studios). Little Richard's stint at Specialty Records in the late 1950s produced not only the most important work of his career, but some of the most exuberant, hair-raising rock & roll ever recorded, and this three-CD box set collects the lot. The folks at Specialty have taken the middle ground between the completist tactic of including every outtake and fragment and overlapping with previous compilations, by including well-known masters alongside key alternative takes, many of which were never issued before. The set is sequenced chronologically, and one hears Richard coming into his own with the soulful, wailing "All Night Long." By the middle of disc one, which includes incendiary versions of "Kansas City" and "Tutti Frutti," the listener may be ready to leap into an ecstatic frenzy. Richard's gospel-derived, raw-throated yelp sounds like God and the Devil shaking hands, and his highly percussive piano playing rattles the bones of nearly every tune. "Slippin' and Slidin'," "Long Tall Sally," and "Good Golly, Miss Molly" are here, among other slices of nirvana. Beautifully remastered, and featuring extensive liner notes (there's a full-sized book and further essays and information in the jewel-case booklets), this set is a winner.
