Synopsis
Dr. Aaron Matthews is a brilliant therapist of international renown. If only the characters of SPEAKING IN TONGUES knew that he is also a homicidal psychopath. At the beginning of this novel, Matthews kidnaps young Megan McCall and imprisons her in an abandoned, vermin-ridden mental hospital, which makes for as Gothic a setting as you could want. Among Megan's would-be rescuers are her father, the brilliant lawyer Tate Collier, her mother, Bett, and her sensitive, romance-novel-reading boyfriend, Josh. The estranged Tate and Bett rekindle their romance as they work together to find Megan. Meanwhile, the genius manipulator Dr. Matthews attacks his enemies with nothing but words--exploiting their weaknesses and convincing them to destroy themselves.

Publisher's Note
Tate Collier, once one of the country's finest trial lawyers, is trying to forget his past. Now, a divorced gentleman farmer, land developer, and community advocate in rural Virginia, he's regrouping from some disastrous mistakes in the realms of love and the law. But controversy - and danger - seem to have an unerring hold on Tate. And even as he struggles to regroup, his alter ego is plotting his demise.

Aaron Matthews, a brilliant psychologist, has turned his talents away from curing patients to far deadlier goals. He's targeted Tate, his ex-wife, Bett, and their estranged daughter Megan for unspeakable revenge. Matthews, ruthless and hell-bent, will destroy anything that inhibits his plans. When their daughter disappears, Tate and Bett reunite in a desperate, heart-pounding attempt to stop Matthews, a psychopath whose gift of a glib tongue and talent for coercion are as dangerous as knives and guns.

Featuring an urgent race against the clock, gripping details of psychological manipulation, and the brilliant twists and turns that are trademark Deaver, Speaking in Tongues delivers the suspense punch that has made this author a best seller. It will leave you speechless.

Industry Reviews
"[A] violent, action-heavy story....[E]ffectively shocking..."
New York Times - Janet Maslin (12/07/2000)

"[D]on't get the impression that this is a highfalutin literary thriller. There's plenty of action to break up the talk, and while the plot mechanics may falter at points, this one packs a lot of wallop."
Chicago Tribune - Chris Petrakos (01/21/2001)
