Sweet-voiced Sparkle enters the R&B arena with a debut album that was written, produced and arranged by the Grammy Award-winning R. Kelly. Some of the attention-catching tracks are "Good Life," which features an appearance from Cam'ron, and "Lovin' You," a timeless classic where Sparkle's vocal range and dynamics shine through brilliantly. The first single, "Be Careful" is a standout collaboration between Sparkle and R. Kelly. The album's lyrics are as strong as its pulsating grooves and rhythms. At times throughout the album's 15 songs, production seems to take on a less-is-more characteristic. Avoiding the pitfall of over-production, R. Kelly arranges masterfully, with experience and passion, while Sparkle offers a vocal performance that's unfailingly riveting even after numerous ballads.
Editorial Reviews Unlike her wannabe-diva peers, this R.Kelly protegee remembers what the 'B' in R&B stands for....R.Kelly surrounds her with blaxploitation-vintage wah-wah guitars, haunting strings, and blue-collar blues; the resulting soul digs far deeper than Kelly's usual bump'n' grind... - Rating: B+ Entertainment Weekly (06/19/1998)
