  Great Sci-Fi Memories!

I remember loving this show when it was aired in '96, and how frustrating it was that it's time slot kept changing, and that it was gone too soon. So thankful it's now on dvd. Great Sci Fi story telling,,,basically a fusion of Aliens and Starship Troopers, but more gritty and realistic. Watching it again makes you grateful that many shows these days are filmed in HD. You can tell that the film quality was not up to snuff back in the mid-90's. Also, it's fun to go back and watch the evolution of CGI, which was still in it's developmental stage at the point of this show.

I recomend that fans who originally watched this short-lived show buy this dvd set. Strongly wonder what would have happened if the show ever got a second season.

A show about Marines, that don't act like Marines.

If you like Scifi and action then this is a pretty good series as long as you can stand the bogus drama the Hollywood loves to through in there. It's like a lower budget version of the new battlestar galactica. A bit older though. Aside from being written by people who know little about the military the most disappointing thing is how the series seems to be cut too short.

So, basically the story is goes like this: evil aliens attack Earth, the only marines that aren't completely useless are the Wildcards.

For coming out in, what, 93(?) the special effects aren't terrible. I mean, it's no new Battle Star Galacitica, but it's no old Battle Star Galactica either.

I actually just got done watching the series and, yeah there are lots of those annoying sci-fi cliches. Like, if they introduce a new character, their dead within a couple of episodes. This series has "red shirts' everywhere. And the characters can be more than a little whiny at times, but for the most part the show isn't terrible.

The Pilot starts a genuinely interesting concept, but it quickly breaks down into new week, new set down on some random planet... at least they didn't have a cowboy world.

I give it a 4/5, which is pretty good considering I only remembered one scene from when it was on television. Basically, it's as good as it was when I was 9, what more could you want?

I can't believe that it is nearly thirteen years ago since I last saw this series. I've recently been going through the 'X-Files' series four and five where several of the cast from 'Space: Above and Beyond' (S:A&B) appeared. The special effects were pretty good and the series doesn't seem dated in my view. The storylines are great and make you think about the Earthly conflicts we seem to see here everyday. Back in 1996 this type of series was shot on 35mm film and had that quality about them, unlike some shows today that are shot on Hi-Def. However, the grittiness we now see in 'Battlestar Galactica' (BG) are there in 'S:A&B', in fact some to the dogfight in space in BG are reminiscent on those seen in 'S:A&B'. So to sum up, 'S:A&B' is a gritty show portraying a New World Order fighting for survival against and alien invasion that in many ways reflects humanity in its desire for survival and to rid itself of a perceived evil. Again what comes into question is who is the evil one, the aliens or mankind? An excellent show worth while having in the DVD collection of any Sci-Fi fan. (Would be great if the DVD series was also released in PAL format.)

Well my review title pretty much sums it up. Ive liked the series from back in the days when it ws being aired on TV. But having the dvd set at home has given me the chance to really delve into the story. Ive found it to be a very gripping drama with many inspiring themes; a family oriented drama.

  NOT just another Sci-Fi show
Review created: 04/09/08

When I first saw this show in FOX's early days I was hooked. It is not just another Sci-Fi geek show it contains drama, humanity, and the sheer ugliness of war. You get to view the lives of a squad of Marines in all there normalcy. The are human fighting an inhuman enemy. In reality when soldiers go to war all their enemies are inhuman. That is what makes this show unique you come to realize what war is; a mind game between two sides. Who is uglier?
I won't give away the end but I can tell you this reality slams home for all the characters in this show. I only wish there could have been more! You can tell the writers and director knew the plug was pulled because they crammed a lot into the last few episodes but can you blame them. Some executive in LA tells them they have three episodes left and they need to wrap it up. At least those of us fans got to find out what happens. There is room for more though because it just does not end. This is a must see for all. The viewer gets to see war, people in war, people pulling strings, assinations, political intrigue, government coverups, big business interference in society, manipulation and even racial tensions (from a different point of view). If after watching this show you can not relate to some of the characters then you are not human. If you like "Saving Private Ryan, Aliens, Full Metal Jacket, An Officer and a Gentleman, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, X-Files, Conspiracy Theory, Logan's Run, and Close Encounters" then you won't belive you missed this.

A good story for TV. It was dropped by the studio not the fans! Wish it lasted more than one season. If you are a Trekie, Battlestar Galactica,or a B5 fan you should enjoy this short lived story.

Always liked this series and thought it paved way for the new Battlestar Galactica in many ways. Too bad it was cut short.

All episodes are here, my favorites include when the marines encounter a Chig "ace of aces" flying an advanced stealth fighter, who ambushes and destroys several USMC squadrons. Naval intelligence nicknames him "Chiggy von Richtofen". Several fighter squadrons are sent to destroy him in "Operation Red Baron."

Then of course there was Kristen Cloke who eventually married the director of the ill fated series. Lucky man!

Sci-Fi fans will also appreciate the haunting musical score by Shirley Walker that permeates each episode.

I loved this series when it was first broadcast and like others wished they would have continued the story. The DVD's are very well done and it was well worth the money. The reason I decided to buy it was that it was a very good value compared to retail stores. They can easily be double the price of what you will find them for here. If you enjoy a good science fiction series with believeable likeable characters and technology that looks right for the time frame you'll enjoy SAAB. Plus the Chigs ae very cool enemies too!

This excellent DVD set is for a sci-fi television series that only last 24 episodes. This set includes all the episodes on 5 discs. on the end of disc 5 has commericals for the show when it was on Fox. the only thing i really dislike about this set is its lack of special features. I had also dislike the cliffhanger ending to the whole series. That, unfortunately, can't be helped. A great fix when you need some sci-fi in a drought of sci-fi movies.

Awesome series. Must have for the Sci-fan. Producers need to know that fans are asking for good, compelling sciif on broadcast weekly TV and NOT getting it. That's why the Battlestar Galactica is doing so well.

I loved watching the original airing of this show on the Fox Net work. Too bad they didn't know how to keep the time slot still, it moved around a lot, and lost it footing with the ratings. Even have the awards the show was nominated for the show was canceled after only a single season. I recently bought the DVD set, and was able to watch the show again. The special effects were cutting edge back then, but aren't so hot anymore. I was very lucky as a prop collector to buy one of the screen used Hammerhead cockpits. Check out some of my photo of the Hammerhead cockpit, and other props. http://byyourcommand.net/photogallery/SAAB

Great look at the future of Space Craft
Review created: 06/03/07

I really enjoy the Hammerhead and the vision of the USMC Space Fighters. It is organized like the Navy and USMC and I appreciate it. Not a bad work of SciFi as it incorporates political and social issues as well. The Chigs are a bit hoakey but overall I like the concept. I enjoy it for the action but I am not really into the Nathan West story as he looks for his long lost girlfriend. Too much of a soap opera and it makes him one dimensional. Overall, I recommend this for science fiction fans who likes military stories.

This was a short lived show that had some interesting characters and their development. I had fond memories of watching it and also knew that I had missed a few episodes. It was an obvious statement of many of the things people felt about the Nam as well. Having served in that tima and place I could see their comparisons quite clearly. Some of their reactions and responses reminded me of how I felt back then.

Interestingly Good Space SCI-FI TV series
Review created: 03/01/07
by:

This show ran for one televsion season starting in 1995. I had never heard of it until browsing on eBay one day. I love sci-fi and especially space sci-fi. I have every Star Wars & Star Trek Movie. I have 9 seasons of Stargate SG-1, the new Atlantis, and many more. Anyway, I read a few of the reviews where other people really enjoyed it, the price wasn't too high so that if I didn't like it I wouldn't feel like I was wasting money, and so I went for it.

It has an interesting story line. It is in the future, after a war with the AI (artificial intelligent) beings. Not all the AI beings were eradicated and they regularly show up on distant planets and cause trouble. To fight the AI war, mankind created a population of invitro human beings. These people, born in a testtube, are actually grown in the lab until they are the equivaltent of 18 years old. They are referred to as "tanks" because that is what they are grow in within the lab. They are bred to fight and treated like second class citizens, but humankind is in a new war with an evil alien species and is trying to incorporate the "tanks" into the mainstream. The main story line follows a group of pilots that includes a "tank" and is actually led by a "tank".

The first episode tries to provide some background on each pilot as well as what is going on currently in the universe. That is not an easy task for a 2 hour pilot, but they pull it off reasonably well. As with most new TV shows, the first couple of episodes are rather stiff and the actors are very two dimensional. You hope that the characters will begin to develop and become more personable, and they do. I especially like the "tank" pilot on the team as he seeks to establish his humanity; the "tank" that leads them who is very military but thinks of his pilots as his family; and the Commadore of the Galactic Battleship that cruises the universe with the crew of pilots aboard. In his "off" hours he plays a mean blues guitar.

The special effects are not amazing but very good for 1995. I watched the whole series and was sorry to see the last episode, knowing that it was only one season and I wouldn't be able to see the continuing drama. I would say that if you liked the first Star Wars series, episodes IV, V, VI, then you will enjoy this series. It is not the of the first Star Wars quality, but if you really enjoy space sci-fi, I do not believe that you will be disappointed with this TV series.
