Southern Heritage Cakes Cookbook by Southern Living

I was recently needed an outstanding sandwich recipe for a wedding shower and found the perfect one in a companion book by Southern Heritage called "Company's Coming!" I made the Ribbon Sandwich recipe from that book and got so many "wows" and compliments that the next day I searched on E-Bay for any other Southern Heritage cookbooks and found The Southern Heritage Cakes Cookbook. It has many old Southern recipes and the sections of the book, Great Layer Cakes, Bountiful Harvests, Grandmother's Favorites, Afternoon Surprises, Celebration Cakes, Back to Basics, and Finishing Touches seem to cover just about any occasion needed for a special dessert. Even the introduction displays the character and intrinsic sense of humor found in this book from the imaginative discourse about Jack Sprat & his wife and the rest of the book did not disappoint either. From the illustration from A Thousand Ways to Please a Husband, to the melody written out in music for the tune, "Shortnin' Bread," to the Original Biblical References & recipe for "Scripture Cake", to a history of John Garner and the cake named for him, to a photo of an original "receipt" from Mrs. Mary Wadley's Receipt Book in the year 1890 and many more like them, this book was one I found hard to put down. It only has 143 pages, but every one has a treasure just waiting to be found and made your own. This book is a pleasure to read, as well as to own and use, and it is definitely going to be one that I will use on a regular basis.
