Very few live shows can match the bristling energy of Oakland's Tower Of Power at their funky best. This live set from their 1998 30th anniversary tour captures all the raw excitement and relentless pace of the hardest grooving soul band since James Brown's JB's. Featuring dynamic vocalist Brent Carter, the world famous TOP horns and the return of original drummer David Garibaldi, the 1998 version of the group proved to be the tightest lineup since their heyday in the '70s. For diehard fans, these powerful performances are an invigorating assurance that the funk will go on. Many TOP hits are here, including the startlingly funky "Soul Vaccination" and the fiendishly grooving "Down To The Night Club (Bump City)." Also on the list are the group's '90s favorites "Soul With A Capital 'S'," "So I Got To Groove" and the raucous tribute to JB himself, "Diggin' On James Brown." Fueled by Garibaldi's crisp syncopation and bassist Rocco Prestia's supple bass lines, the horns blow hard throughout the show, especially on funky gems like "You Got To Funkifize" and the monster hit "What Is Hip." If you haven't caught TOP live, this is the next best thing.
