Woody Rock takes the title of his album SOUL MUSIC very literally, not only in the stylistic sense relating to the use of R&B-based sounds, but also in the sense of spirituality. This isn't a straight-up gospel album by any means, but Rock fuses serious spiritual messages with his cutting-edge R&B production. Smooth, melismatic singing, gently undulating beats, and slick synthesizer programming play just as important a role on SOUL MUSIC as Rock's loftier lyrical concerns, proving that it's possible to think about God without cooling your heels. Some hotshot R&B guest stars (Dru Hill, Mary Mary, etc.) don't hurt matters either.
