I have a large collection of VHS, 8mm, and mini-dv tapes that I want to convert to DVD. This machine is perfect for all 3. It has all the connections for external cameras to connect and play in the 8mm or mini-dv on the front. It has a one-touch transfer button for the VHS to DVD. If you are in the market for a machine to convert old tapes of any format then this is the one. I payed $78 total (including shipping). I checked Best Buy 2 days ago and it priced at $229. It will also record from DVR but I have not even tried yet.

I bought this recorder used at a great price. It is easy to use and hook up to the satellite reciever. It is also easy to dub from the VCR to the DVD. It will handle just about any DVD format. You need to have a dual tuner reciever to watch another channel while recording.

  Good Unit but not great.

This is a very good unit, easy to hook up and use. The upscale feature makes a very noticable difference in the picture. The only reason I didn't give it an excellent rating is due to the fact that it will not record some TV movies that are copy protected and it will not record some VHS movies either. One thing that I think is a problem is that when dubbing VHS to DVD it will start recording but after it is well into the movie a message comes up saying it cannot record copy protected movies. This is a bummer because it ruins the blank DVD before you find out it won't record it. This is not a problem for copy protected TV programs, as it tells you before it starts recording. All in all in is a very good unit..

It works fine. I didn't realize it didn't come with a tuner. It did not have coaxel cable capability. I had to get a cable box to get it to work.

I like that it lets me watch a slide show of my .jpg pictures, while listening to my .mp3 music.

I dislike that I cannot record sound which can then sync with the slide show to narate it.

I MOST dislike that the operation of it required studying the book extensively, just to use it. There is nothing intuitive about using the remote control. There is no provision to set the remote to control my TV volume. Presumably it would, if I bought a Sony TV. Actually, this is the most difficult piece of equipment to operate, that I have ever owned!

Easy to use and haven't had any issues. For those with dvd burning issues it usually seems like they won't finalize the disc and have playback problems. Read the instructions and it should'nt be an issue with current players. Also, it isn't that loud. Turn the TV up

I bought this DVD Recorder so that I can get rid of all my VHS movies. You know copy them over to DVDs. Well you cant because most all movies have a copy right protection on them so it enables you from transfering them over to a DVD. So if I would have known that, I more than likely would not have bought this item. Other than that it plays VHS and DVD movies fine. Easy to install to your home system.

Excellent but not a pass through unit
Review created: 01/09/09
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I had tried two other makes of DVD recorder/VCR combos that just did not work properly.
I bought this as an open box item and was perfectly satisfied when it arrived - not even a scratch. The item works very well and I have had no trouble with it mechanically.
My one dislike is that it is not a pass through unit and I have to run the TV signal from the satelite box through the DVD recorder to watch TV. There may be an answer to this problem that I haven't found yet.
My e-mail to the vendor about this problem was answered in about 10 minutes.

I have a large backlog of videos on both VHS and Mini DV and 8MM tape and 8MM film. I purchased this unit to set up a central DVD burner to make up disks for my family of all these videos going back over 30 years.
The price was a surprise and the unit I received was a return with no use. (Remote Batteries still in pack as well as other accessories and advertising still on the unit.

It works very well and most importantly has the options I needed to make DVD's that will are usable on most all players.

As with most purchases I make on E-Bay the price is about right the product well described and in the condition stated in the listing.

Lots of features, but no tuner
Review created: 01/01/09

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

When I purchased this DVD/VCR combo, I was looking for 3 things:
1) Basic VCR for the kids to watch their old tapes on.
2) S-VHS VCR to play back some old camcorder tapes that I needed to get into the computer for some editing.
3) An upconverting DVD player.

The Sony VX560 provides all of these in one box, which is very nice for reducing some of the clutter in the entertainment center, especially since it can be connected with only a single HDMI cable. To top it off, it's a DVD recorder, which is a feature I wasn't even looking for.
Good Stuff:
- One touch copying from VHS to DVD, or DVD to VHS.
- Even the VCR can play out the HDMI output, with upconversion. Too many of these combo type boxes require separate cables for the VCR and DVD sections.
- Firewire and USB jacks on the front, so you can watch or record from your digital camcorder, or even dump photos from a camera to DVD for a slideshow.

Limitations:
- No tuner.
- Slow to load most disks. Close the tray and wait....
- No S-VHS recording, only playback. Can only record regular VHS format.
- Refuses to copy most copyrighted VHS tapes to DVD.
- Refuses to record some copyrighted TV shows to DVD.

  Great for techy people...
Review created: 07/23/09
by:

The Sony RDR-VX560/535 DVD Recorder / VCR Combo is excellent for people with good technical skills, but setting up and/or using any type of DVD recorder can be a little too technical for the average person.

For those that are just looking for a useful unit that saves space, I would recommend they purchase a DVD Player / VCR combo unit instead of a more expensive DVD Recorder / VCR combo.

You need to read the manual to understand how to use the unit. It is plug-and-play until you get to the DVD recording part and/or have another Sony DVD player in your entertainment system, but you can figure it out with patience and by reading the manual.

It is very useful once you learn to use it, but be prepared to make mistakes and start over. You need to be patient; you'll eventually get it to work as long as you are persistent.

For those who are more technically inclined; proper DVD Video recording is more easily accomplished with an Audio/Video-USB converter and a PC with a DVD burner and good Video recording software. Nonetheless; having this unit is convenient if your Cable box is not in the same room as your PC.

BEING PARTIAL TO "SONY" PRODUCTS. WHAT CAN I SAY? THE UNIT WAS A BREEZE TO HOOK
UP. EXCEPT FOR A FEW ITEMS LEFT OUT OF THE PACKAGING (LIKE THE AUDIO/VIDEO CARD AND TOP BOX CONTROLLER CORD). I WAS ABLE TO HOOK IT UP AND PUT THE UNIT
THRU ITS PACES AND WAS (AS USUAL FOR SONY) VERY PLEASED. THE ONLY THING IS THAT; TO USE THE RECORDING ASPECT OF THE PRODUCT I (DON'T KNOW ABT ANYONE ELSE)
HAVE TO CONTINUALLY READ OVER THE INSTRUCTIONS. A SMALL PRBLM; I'LL GET USED TO IT. I ESPECIALLY LIKE THE DUBBING FROM DVD TO VHS AND VHS TO DVD. WILL MAKE
MUCH NEEDED SPACE IN THE MOVIE CABINETS.BY AND LARGE A GOOD BUY.
