UPDATED REVIEW: I bought a PS3 after spending a lot of time researching the PS3 vs the XBOX and the Wii during the Christmas season of 2007. Our family has used this system for a year now and we still love it, and are convinced we made the best purchase. The PS3 is the best of the 3 in my opinion. Our family already owns a GameCube and the Wii (other than the controller) really isn't that much of an improvement over the GameCube. The Blu-ray capability in the PS3 makes it a better system than the XBOX. The PS3 also has a 6-axis motion sensitive wireless controllers. OK if you have already decided on the PS3, the next choice is which one to get. Do not buy the 40 GB version it is NOT backward compatible, meaning you can not play Playstation or Playstation 2 games on it. You can with the 80 GB version. Plus, with all the things you can do you are going to want the extra storage space. The 80 GB player shiped with the MotorStorm game and it is a GREAT game. If you can still find this package deal you are in luck. Sony will change the package deal for 2008-09. MotorStorm uses the 6-axis feature in the controler - you move your hands to increase your turns when you drive your motorcycle thru the mud. Yep, Wii isn't the only one with sensors in their controller. Sony's useage of the 6-axis technology is just more subtle. Sony has a nice line-up of games to choose from and allows you to play on line at no extra charge. It is fun to be able to challenge my little brother in Guitar Hero 3, we live in different states - easy to access. Oh and the guitar for the PS3 is wireless, just like the controllers, using bluetooth technology so I can dance all over the room if I want to and not worry about getting tangled up and tripping over unsightly wires. The best part is the Blu-ray DVD player (which plays the old DVDs as well) oh my! the TV never looked so good. You won't want to watch regular DVDs after you hear and see how good Blu-ray movies are. Many Blu-ray DVDs ship with an insert that is a disclaimer that reads something like this: this Blu-ray is made with the highest and latest industry standard if it won't play on your player you made need to upgrade your hardware etc... YIKES! If you spent $300 on a Blu-ray player it can get quickly get passed by with the every changing and updated technology. Not to worry if you have a PS3 - it easily connects to the internet and Sony will push software updates to your system, so you will always have the most up to date version of software - that is another reason to get the 80 gig bundle. You will have plenty of room for your game files and for your software update files. Sony released software version 2.17 on 13 March 2008. This update includes Blu-Ray 1.1 I feel bad for folks who shelled out the bucks for a Blu-ray player and will have trouble watching the latest discs. Sony makes it possible to download updates on to a USB device and then let the PS3 system read it from your device if you don't have it connected to the internet or wi-fi. See their website for details. Sound and Picture also depened on your TV set, Sound System, and which method you connect your player to both. Highest marks for this system! If my review helps you to decide please select [YES] below. Thanks!! Review ID: 10000000005753447 Was this review helpful? Report this review 13 of 20 people found this review helpful. I just bought a PS3, after the HD Format war has finally been decided, and Blu Ray is the winner I figured if I were to get a Blu Ray player mind as well be a PS3 then I can play some games on it to. Mind you I have a Xbox 360 and have had one since launch. comparing the 2 systems they both have their Pro's and Con's. They both do High definition with their games. I have yet to be wow'd with the graphics in their games over the Xbox 360, but I hear in time it will be a difference. Now in terms on their online there is no comparison. 360 has this down pat. PS3 is good, but nowhere near the calibur of the 360, and well worth the $50 a yr for xbox live. Now I have to say setting up your Gamertag for 360 was way more annoying than PS3, Luckily I just Migrated mine from my old Xbox and wasn't an issue, but I helped my friend with his and was annoying the process you had to go through. Ok now with the menu system. I found the PS3 menu system to be very annoying and cumbersome to navigate through compared to the 360. Trying to setup the PS3 for HD and chating and stuff was much more involed than what the 360 entailed. All in all it is a good system and worth picking up even if you just get it as a Blu Ray player, the games are not leaps and bounds over the 360 like Sony promised and a lot of the PS3 games only run in 720p while 360 games run in 1080i or 1080p. Definitely worth checking into. Review ID: 10000000005894468 Was this review helpful? I bought it because it was a good price for the unit and the one i bought had a 3 year warranty with it that was the big plus for me. Review ID: 10000000009061449 Was this review helpful? Report this review I bought this system on EBAY for my boyfriend's birthday. We have no children, this system is for adult play. I was concerned about the system being able to play games from previous systems. I was also concerned about making such a large purchase on EBAY (I have mostly stuck to clothing and cds). Last, I wondered if over-heating would be any issue as I had heard of some problems that both this and the new xbox console were having with heat. We found a family on ebay who's children received the PS3 bought preferred the xbox system. It was an 80 gig with 2 controllers...for under $400. Everything was beautiful and as described EXCEPT for one controller. It came broken. The seller insists it is the fault of UPS, but issued a modest refund to offshoot the cost of replacing it on ebay. We then tinkered with trying to fix it and ended up getting most of the buttons to work, most of the time. It will do for now! The overall quality of this product is top notch. Faster, Brighter, Clearer than the PS2, this has been an excellent investment. Though we have not tried any PS1 games in the console yet, we have played a few PS2 games with NO PROBLEMS! The only difference is that it "creates" a PS2 memory card with its internal memory before you can start play. It stores the game info for you...we are able to play PS2 Gran Turismo just fine! Thanks to the great deal we were able to get on EBAY, we bought the 80 and we are happy we did. We have been able to add our music and pictures to it and download intros to games (via its built in wi-fi). Give Echochrome a try if you like puzzles! Though you can feel the heat its fan turns out, we have not had any over-heating issues. One things I have noticed, is that the console will not charge the wireless controllers unless it is powered on. I can see why it makes sense, but it means leaving the PS3 on a lot more often than we'd like to. I know we can purchase a separate charger and we probably will. I just wanted to share my specific observations and comments about the new system. I rated it Excellent. 5 stars. Review ID: 10000000008999383 Was this review helpful?
