I saw this mp3 player on display out of the corner of my eye at Wal-Mart a few months ago and I decided to give it a shot. I needed to buy a mp3 player since I was still using a clunky CD player and buying batteries for it every week was becoming not only a hassle, but expensive. I wasn't very keen on buying an apple iPod/mini though as many of my friends have them and nearly all of them complain about how easy iPod's screens crack. I saw this one was made by Sony, figured Sony is a brand I can trust and would probably be of outstanding quality, so I bought it.

Anywhere you'll read online you'll see this product has very mixed reviews, most of the complaints are true, though over time in using it I've found most of them are very exaggerated. The mp3 player itself comes packaged with a program you need to use to upload songs to the device; "SonicStage". "SonicStage" is absolutely awful haha, there is no beating around the bush on this one. It crashes a lot, it's very unstable, especially when you try to upload songs to your mp3 player. I read one review on amazon.com saying to simply upgrade SonicStage immediately when you download it to version 4.3 and it'd be more stable and she was right -- so for new people planning to buy this or those who have already have it, upgrade SonicStage ASAP to solve the reliability issues version 1.0 has. The new version is far from perfect but it's much more stable. You can find the newest version here: http://musicstore.connect.com/custom/promos/download.html

Sony boasts it can hold an impressive 650+ tracks but what it doesn't really emphasize on is that's only if you convert your songs to ATRAC format. Converting can take a long time depending on the power & speed of your computer. It holds on mine about 200 (unconverted) mp3's. If you want it to hold more than 200 songs conversion is a timely necessity. Battery life is where this thing shines. If you charge it for literally just 3 minutes it'll last for over 3 hours. Fully charged, it can last nearly 2 days! Charging it however is a slight drawback; if you have a laptop this would be the ideal mp3 player for you since it requires you to charge it on a USB port, for the rest of us though it basically means you'll need to wait until you're home or around a computer that has USB ports to re-charge it.

The sound quality on this is excellent.

I read reviews online where customers had complained the volume isn't loud enough or it doesn't go high enough. Those people are crazy. The built in FM Tuner is also very convenient. It reads and sounds just as if you were listening to a real radio -- very clear and crisp. Unfortunately it doesn't include an AM tuner, which I would have loved to see Sony include so I could listen to hockey games while at work. There really isn't a lot to complain about, Sony did a great job.

The menus are easy to understand.

The actual device, attracts finger prints like crazy especially if you picked up a black or gray model. It doesn't matter how clean your hands are, if you touch it it'll show, and you'll find yourself cleaning it easily everyday, maybe even every few hours if you're compulsive about cleanliness like I am. It seems durable. I've dropped it a few times at the hockey/basketball arena and the shell never cracked -- although I may have just been lucky.

All and all, more pros than cons and worth the money.

Pros. Size is real nice, about the size of a flash drive; Storage 2 Megs is plenty of space holds 1320 songs; Sound is real close to my Sony headphones, but a lot smaller earbuds. You will not be disappointed in the bass either; Ease of use. If you can use any usb flash drive your go to go !!; Navigation is very easy to use, with the l.e.d. type display. Even charging the battery is done as your plugged into the usb port. A+ Sony again!!!

Cons. That I did not buy it sooner lol

  Sony Walkman NW-E000 series mp3

So far, I have had 2 of the new Sony Walkman NW-E000 series mp3 players (a 512mb and a 2gb). These are great mp3 players. The 512mb can hold over 250 3-min. songs and the 2gb holds about 1350. The battery last FOREVER, but it takes a while to charge the first time. After the first charge, it recharges fairly fast. It's design is simple and easy to use making it great for a first timer. It is also very customizable in its features and playback. Also, if you get the better models (with the F at the end), they come loaded with a radio. All of the Sony mp3s come with SonicStage music library for your computer. SonicStage includes a library to hold all your music (including what is already on you PC), an easy download feature to download from and to cds and yoour player, and a link to the CONNECT music store. When you buy from the store, it goes to your CP and is stored for infinite mp3 downloading and limited cd downloading (a great feature if you ask me). You can download from up to 5 different CPs. The only major downside is that the screen doesn't play videos or pictures. You can still use it to read track and player info, though. I recomend this player over any other of its price and it is an all-around good product.

  Athletic, versatile, great! MP3 player

I decided to buy this mp3 player because it was small, athletic, aero-dynamic, and I'd previously had a Sony mp3, but I had lost it. What's not to love about this thing! It's so small, it's easy to travel with, run with, walk with, etc...(you get the picture). Great sound quality! It even has a sport's timer! The only thing that's negative about this thing is that when you're outside, it is near-impossible to see the song name, or anything on the display.

I like that it's very small and one can carry it around anywhere without being in the way. It also serves as a watch and calendar. I love the fact it recharges when one plugs it in their computer to download/upload music. The battery lasts a long time and it's also a radio.

I already had a sony bean, and I`m having a hard time switching to this. I bought it because I wanted more space but I`m not feeling it. I don`t think its as user friendly as my bean, but again I really didn`t give it a chance.

Best choice on Sony MP3 2gb

What I love about the Sony MP3 I bought thru EBAY is Its quality besides the great price I bought it for. It turned out to be a great Valentine's gift for my husband. I recently went to a Sony store and the prices for the same item were way out of my budget. Will buy another one with confidence.

EASY AND SO PORTABLE. IPODS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE AND THIS DOES EVERYTHING FOR MORE THAN HALF THE PRICE. THE ONLY THING IS YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD SONICSTAGE TO PUT SONGS ONTO IT. EASY TO PUT SONGS ON AND TINY ENOUGH TO GO ANYWHERE!!! ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

Sony NW-E005F - GREAT Sound, Sized right!
Review created: 04/24/08
by:

After having played with this item only a couple days, I am pretty darned impressed with the ease of use the NW-E005 offers. Although I am on dial-up & the SonicStage software had to be downloaded, everything went off without a hitch.

The bass this item provides is hard-hitting & phenomenal and the clarity is equal to anything I have heard anywhere, to include my 24-bit PC card. The volume is more than sufficient. I did upgrade to a more comfortable set of headphones/earbuds, but the provided set delivered great sound right out of the box - they were simply uncomfortable for my own ears.

I have only 2 cons to mention in regards:

First - the provided headphones/earbuds are the same style, hard plastic units that Sony was distributing with the Walkmans of old (as far back as 1st-generation CD Walkman), which I thought they might at least have had the consideration to include a more comfy in-ear bud style for this type of item.

Second - the LED readout, while crisp, clear & rather inclusive indoor is difficult to see in broad daylight (to include overcast conditions). The LED scrolling text also cuts out too early for my own personal taste, leaving the renaming of multiple songs from a single artist as an almost 'must do'.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this item. I have also incorporated a double-end stereo jack to my Altec Lansing PC speakers & sub system and this item delivered the goods.

Convenience, ergonomic design, ease of manipulation, full-time MegaBass (as Sony intended), size & price make the Sony NW-E005 a mini powerhouse in the palm of your hand. :)

  Poor Design Trumps Great Sound
Review created: 03/08/08
by:

This Walkman is one of a series ranging from 1 to 8 GB. They are all of similar design. I bought the 4 GB unit. The sound is excellent -- in fact extraordinary -- but the package it comes in turns out to be everything generations past associated with cheap post-war Japanese junk products. After six months of use, the earphone plug at the top of the unit began to deteriorate. The earphone jack would constantly slide minutely inside the housing causing absolutely intolerable and annoying interruptions of sound. The slightest movement of the cords caused by jostling or walking -- or a turn of the head -- would cut off reception to one or both of the earbuds.

The internal components are clearly susceptible of easy wear. And they wear quicly. The poor design of this unit assures it. The earphone jack plug is positioned at a point (at the top of the unit) where all of the important music selection controls are located, and the utterly poor manner in which the earphones are designed contributes to unusually fast wear and tear. Sony has managed to design a completely counterintuitive system of wiring its earphones making one earbud lead about one-third the length of the other. While I eventually found out that this was because you are supposed to position the bud cords behind your neck and drape the main cord over your shoulder to the front, proper placement did not ultimately matter. The unequal cord length requires continuous readjustment. Inevitably, the earbuds popped out of the ears unless extraordinary pre-wear measures were undertaken, like wrapping a length of the cord in a slack position around a shirt button, for instance. Also, if you use earbuds other than those that come with the unit, the noise suppression system ceases to work.

Other poor design features include a very tiny display window that presents control options and play selections. The window activates lighted text when you activate the controls. In addition to the window's unreasonably small size (less than half the size of your pinky finger), the text disappears after approximately five to seven seconds, and there is no way to make it last longer. If you are in a high ambient light environment, it is virtually impossible to read any of the information displayed on the screen.

Additionally after six months of use, all the printed material on the housing wore off. It was clearly painted onto the surface of the unit with no expectation that it would remain for any length of time. The surface is easily scratched by any metal object (keys, coins) that inadvertently get placed into the same pocket, so after a short period of time, the surface of the unit takes on a very poor appearance.

I could go on, but I have said enough to suit me about this unfortunate and silly object.

I have written this because I am very angry about having spent the money I did for something that is so poorly conceived and executed and so cheaply made. It is all the more pathetic because the sound it produces is so good. Sony has designed this unit with indifferent concern for durability and customer satisfaction. This unit is a pig. All I can say is, if you buy it, you may initially marvel at the sound but will eventually regret your purchase. You have been warned.
