Sensational TV & Picture. My Best Purchase Ever!

For the money – this is the best TV on the market. The Sony Grand Wega 50” (KF50SX300) provides exceptional HD quality, huge size (50”!) and at fantastic price considering all comparables. I traded in my Panasonic flat-screen tube (27”) for this gem a week before the New England Patriots were playing in the superbowl… what a decision. Since then, I’ve become addicted to HD sports, fallen in love with movies that are made for the big screen (ie Sin City) and even enjoyed showing digital pictures directly to the television – after all, it has a sony stick slot and can directly display photos from my Canon cameras.

The Sony Grand Wega is a rear projection television with an LCD screen – that’s how it costs so little relative to comparable plasmas and LCDs… that said, the Sony Grand Wega 50” is only 17” deep… that’s right! ONLY 17” THICK!!

According to Sony, the power of the TV is its 3LCD technology: “The KDF-E55A20 delivers natural color reproduction and exceptional brightness levels due to 3LCD technology with 1366 x 768 screen resolution, which is more than a native 720p capability… 3LCD technology is a video projection system that uses three LCD panels to produce an image. There are three key advantages of 3LCD televisions: A Brighter Picture even in well-lit rooms; Natural Colors are displayed with intense vibrancy; High Detail for spectacular HD performance.”

The wide screen mode allows you to watch 4:3 normal broadcasts in wide screen mode (16:9 aspect ratio).

In summary – I was certainly nervous when I bought the Sony Grand Wega because I had never splurged on anything quite like that. Months later, I am so glad I did and enjoying the television as much today as I did during the Patriots Superbowl victory. Sony makes excellent products – and this is one worth the investment. Movies, sports, and television have never looked or felt so good.

Awesome HDTV does take some getting use too... Read on

This HDTV is awesome! It does how ever take some getting use to as far as regular digital picture. We have Directv and the regular digital picture (non-HD) but still a digital picture is somewhat grainy, that's what takes some getting use to. But after you have the set for about a month or so your eye adjust to it. Now as for the HD picture it is absolutely spectacular, just as most stores advertise in house. If you haven't seen this HDTV on a regular (non-HD) picture I would recommend it up front, and as for over the air broadcast (analog) I couldn't tell you what that picture would be like. Probably would not be as good as digital satellite picture. I also couldn't tell you what over the air HD broadcast would be like either. I almost took my set back because I wasn't too satisfied with the picture quality for the price of the set. But I stuck it out. Now I love it and don't regret keeping it. If you watch HD channels for awhile and then go back to a regular digital picture you'll have to adjust to the picture quality a bit but overall it's not bad. One other thing is it takes this set about 2 or 3 minutes to get up to full picture brightness when you first turn it on, a minor inconvenience. Warning: Something the sales people won't tell you.. You really need to purchase a backup power supply, APC or some other brand, for this HDTV if you live in a thunderstorm or power outage prone area. This set has an expensive HID bulb (high intensity bulb). The cooling fan on this set stays on for a few minutes after you turn the set off so it can cool the bulb down slowing. This bulb a about $250. You never want the power to just shut off, the owners manual will even tell you this Never unplug the unit from the outlet while the set is on. This will cause you to have premature bulb failure. Brad Taylor...

  User Friendly Sony HDTV

Just installed the Sony 50WE610 HDTV. Good factory settings. After selecting the "Cool" temperature setting and sending the sharpness control to -0-, the picture was outstanding. Very little adjustment was needed using my calibration disc. The OFF AIR HD tuner pulled in every available digital signal on the first try using a powered Zenith set top antenna shaped like a slice of pie. Got it at Radio Shack. You will enjoy better audio with a good receiver and a surround sound setup.
