Ok it works fairly well and plays upconverted DVDS in 1080P. Its a real good match for your new Sony big screen TV as well, and YES it has HDMI output. As far as I could tell the 1080P output ONLY PRODUCES UPCONVERSION IF YOU use the HDMI output.
If your like me you will play around with the settings to make sure your upconverting. Thats probably why you bought this player right? You wanted some kind of a 1080P input for the new big screen and your not about to spring for a Blue Ray player yet right? at least until your local Blockbuster rents Blue Ray movies right? Oh and by the way forget about HD-DVD its NOT happening. Buy HD-DVD only if you want to display it next to your Beta MAX machine from the 70s. Yeah I know its a great technology....so was Beta. Its your money however so have a good time.
This is a small player with plenty of features most of which you will never use. If your pumping this units output into a 19 inch tabletop set you wont probably know the difference so save your money and keep the old non progressive 2 year old DVD player. You wont even know the differnce.
If however, youve got a big screen home theater system and sound processor dont hesitate to pick it up for around $100. You will like the picture and sound no problem. It works particularly well with Sony Bravia so go for it.
I gave it a "good' not excellent because the book that comes with it sucks.
You gotta read the whole thing to get the simplest things set up. Oh and by the way SONY PLEASE SHIP THESE DEVICES SET UP TO PLAY DOLBY DIGITAL OUT OF THE BOX.
DONT MAKE US DIG INTO THE SETUP TO GET DOLBY GOING.
NEWSFLASH SONY most people have sound processors! Dont ship defaulted players that run only two channel audio. And as an aside, WHO did you hire to do the onscreen graphics? My last Sony player had a great background graphic that was admirable to view along with its SONY logo. I hope you guys saved some money on graphic arts because it very UN impressive now.
All in ALL Sony did a good job on this player, but look out for some shortcomings in operator book and onscreen graphics.
