  Fast, Affordable, and especially sturdy.

Things I like:

*Affordable, given the near-slr functionality of the camera.

*Fast; Quick power-up, fast write speed.

*Sturdy. I actually just dropped the camera from my desk, five minutes before I typed this article. As it lied on the floor, I stared at it and found myself in the beginnings of a mild anxiety attack. However, once I picked it back up, and powered it on, I found that the camera function without fail. This camera is very professionally handcrafted.

*Size; it's pretty small, but not too small. I'd say it's half-way between between a point and shoot camera, and a DSLR. When I have the conversion lens on, some people mistake it for a DSLR at first glance.

*Quality. Once you get your white balances and exposures right, you can get some really professional shots from this camera. I should know, I do this for a living. I use this camera for stock photography, and some studio portraiture. Delivered results to clients and they were pleased, and I received payment.

*Compatibility. Worked will with my cheap Bower bounce flash. A perfect match with my IBook G4. The camera keeps track of all shutter speeds, apertures, and exposure settings, and uploads them to IPhoto. Also hooks up to a television which is good, when I'm showing clients their photos (they are not all just surrounding me as I hold the camera).

Things that I don't like:

*The color "red" will tend to bleed in some shots. Especially in high ISO.

*Only works with USB cables that have that power cylinder on them (when transferring photos to my computer).

*Cannot zoom while recording in Video mode. You have to stop recording, then zoom in or zoom out, then hit the record button again.

*Scroll will is a little tricky to work with at first. You may accidently change your shutter speeds, aperture, or exposure settings when you first use this camera. After awhile you will become accustomed to depressing the wheel to lock in settings, so as not to accidently change these settings.

Overall the many benefits that I have seen with this camera outweigh the negative aspects of it. I'm thinking about buying a second one to give to my fiance (so that she doesn't touch mine). I recommend this to the savvy digital camera photographer, that wants to upgrade their point-and-shoot to something more advanced, and that has near dslr features and photo quality.

An Objective and Realistic Look at the V3
Review created: 08/13/07
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm happpy that people are very pleased with this model. Having confidence and liking your camera are two very important aspects in rating cameras.

Here's a few realistic mentions that are just as noteworthy about the V3. The auto modes tends to choose small apertures. Small aperture, small lens, small sensor all add up (or down in this case) to lower resolution.

I think to be objective then the facts should be presented. I love this camera and I probably say that for the classic rangefinder style it has. It is a super looking little gem of a digital camera. I would recommend it to anyone.

I feel it's just as important to mention exactly what you get with one though.
It can tend to be "over sharp" in some circumstances or conditions.

You must be aware of the tendacy to use small apertures and discover that "less sharpening" is better sometimes. Watch the aperture, don't depend on the sharpest setting, and be careful with the jog control.

I believe the Canon G6 is a better choice in this class simply because it has a better lens and program. But the difference is so slight that the Sony should be rated between a "good and excellent" on this rating system.

With the tendacy and control in mind the V3 is an exceptional image taker of which I am very impressed with. I rate the Canon G6 and Sony DSC-V3 as two of the best point-and-shoot digital cameras, new or old. That includes the newer Sony H models and the Canon G7. If the rangefinder style appeals to you, I'd pull the trigger on one without hesitation because your ability to get great photos is at your disposal.

I originally bought this camera when it first came out from sony,So this is my second one to replace my first one that got dropped and broken, I wanted a good quality camera, and not just a cheapy to get me by,This camera is a perfect size camera for man hands and womens,I can push all the buttons with no problems, I love the night shot,it works great at very low lighting like party's you can see a everything, and set it up to take a normal or night vision shot with just a push of a button,(video too)This last time I got the camera I got every extra that was made for it, The extras on the other hand put you at a new level of taking pictures, Because after you put on the wide-angle or any other lens you Have too put on the Ext. flash other wise the bottom of your picture will have the biggest shadow you have ever seen...it's pretty bad, over all I still love this camera.

Well built, High quality SONY DSC-V3 camera

I've used this camera for 3 weeks now, and it's a great little point-n-shoot camera. Here are a few positives about this camera.

Very Good resolution of 7.2 Megapixels.
Low noise
Excellent macro performance
Excellent build quality and it feels like it's worth the money.
Good ergonomics
Proper hand grip
Surprisingly Excellent auto focus speed
Very fast shot to shot times (just over 1 sec)
Excellent write speed (up to 4 MB/sec)
Good battery life
Optional screw mounting lens adapter
Very large 2.5" LCD with anti-reflective coating
Multiple media support (MemoryStick Pro & Compact Flash)
External flash support via Hot-shoe
Fast USB 2.0 transfers
Combined AC Adapter / Battery charger
Takes RAW images.

Of course you can't compare this with other Digital SLR cameras both image quality and etc., but if you compare it with other similar type cameras, Sony DSC-V3 is much better camera to use. I've sold quite a few and they love it. I may have a few on sale by the time you read this. Check my sales items to see if it's available. Awesome Camera!

You cant beat the picture quality of this camera. Wide lens captures large items, scenes and you can also put on a external flash with it! Taking movies are a snap, and so many different modes and setups, you can do just about anything! Get this camera if you're looking for a high quality digital camera. Just make sure to get a large memory (1+ gigs) card because the mp of this camera is 7.2

It is quite impressive and lovely digital camera.
I searched many digital ps and slr camera, but it is quite good in price and image quality in its class. I studied many, final choice was Canon S80 and Sony V3. But Canon s80 is quite expensive for me and build quality is weak to Sony V3. Image quality from many professional photos are not much different in regular size. Canon S80 is very sharp and natural and crisp images, but sony V3 is impressive color rendation and image quality in great sharpness. Canon coloring is more artificial than Sony. I am very happy to this V3.

I love this camera! The best pictures...easy to use...love it! One downside is the cost for repairs. The 1st one I had the button to snap pictures popped off and Sony wanted almost $200 to repair it. That was a rip. So I decided I would never pay that much for a camera again ($599 back in 2005). I had to get one for a bargain from ebay.

I like this product because it was almost new with a price of a used product, so I save a lot. The product came with some extras like an aditional battery, memory cards and camera bag that made it better deal. The only problem with this used product even when was like new, it was smeling tabaco very strongly, but with the time and some odor spray it has been minimizing. It was shipping fasst and with a good packing.

I love the camera and all of its features, but it keeps coming up with file error and I lose some pictures. I don't recommend this camera for people going on long trips or taking pictures of extremely important events that can't be repeated.

  Rock Solid Camera
Review created: 08/21/09
by:

This IS and Excellent camera, if you need what it can provide. It won't give you a big zoom range, but what zoom it has can help you stay a comfortable distance from portrait subjects. (4X zoom)

It give you the option of using Sony's Memory Stick, or Compact Flash style memory. You can use the small flip up flash, or attach one on the top mounted hotshoe. The body is made of magnesium alloy and feels very strong when you handle it.

It has modes you would see on higher end big zoom cameras, like, full auto, Program mode, Shutter priority mode, Aperture priority mode and Manual mode. It has scene settings such as night, night portrait, beach, snow, candlelight and landscape. In program modes you can chose White balance for ambient lighting such as Sun, Clouds, Fluorescent and incandescent. You can set ISO settings and a plus or minus on Sharpness, Saturation and Contrast. You can choose plus or minus on the flash in night portrait mode as well. There are four flavors of flash, as well, Auto, On, Off and slow syncro.

This is a rare camera with 'Night Shot' It uses a small infrared light to illumine a very dark shot, to get detail from darkness. The picture is a 'green scale' but pretty clear details.

The V3 won't fit in a shirt pocket, but it will go in some larger cargo pockets. It is best to wear it with a strap. It is not a big camera, but it doesn't feel like it will crumple if you sit on it either.

7.2 megapixels give you a pretty nice sized printed photo and very impressive facebook sized pics, but don't expect miracles for 8 by 10's. Well lit scenes, or the camera on a tripod with still subjects will help keep things clear

If you can work around having to move a few steps to get the framing of your shot right, this is a great camera.

  EXCELLENT product!
Review created: 09/09/08

This Sony camera is a solid deal. We bought it before going to Africa on a mission trip primarily because of its low light capabilities. We have used it over and over again with GREAT results. It has all the bells and whistles one could ever want with programmable features and tons of add-ons available. When we lost our camera on a recent trip to Peru (along with all our priceless pictures), we found this one on e-bay for a GREAT price (with TONS of accessories). We are thrilled to have this camera back in our use. Sharp pictures; easy use available, but options for the serious photographer; large screen; Sony's quality. What more could you ask?

Review created: 01/07/07

Excellent photo quality. I had the V-1 and this is a nice upgrade. it's a little big and heavy. and you need to really keep your hand steady to avoid blurry photos.
overall, one of the best point and shoots you can get.

Top notch performance in a point and shoot
Review created: 11/18/05
by:

I purchased this camera last winter because I wanted near-DSLR features and performance in a p&s package and this camera delivers...pictures are clear and color is vibrant. Low light functionality is superior to anything I've seen or read about. With the Hologram auto-focus light, I can literally take razor sharp pictures in complete darkness. A big plus is the ability to use compactflash and memory sticks at the same time.
The size and weight of the camera is nearly perfect, being just big enough to be comfortable when shooting, but not too big to carry around (invest in a good bag) It has a large LCD screen that is easy to see in all kinds of light. It really is so easy to take a great photo with this camera. Bottom line...You will not be disappointed if you buy this camera.
